Preference? Why do I ask, you ask?
I just got a brand spanking new 6L6 version built and sent to me from Brad/Bogner. It was ordered last year, and with the holidays, NAMM, the cabinet guy and other delays, took a while to get done. Anyway, it showed up yesterday.
I had owned a 34 version before and 4 or 5 101B's, but all 34 set ups. When I ordered this one, I decided to go with 6L6 as that is what the amp was designed around and thought it may be a bit different than my other 34 based amps. I was sort of wanting a good 3 channel amp to cover a bunch of stuff that was a bit different from all my mods. Meanwhile, the new Diezel D-Moll showed up and rose quickly to the top of the heap. I had already made my mind up to sell this Bogner as soon as it got delivered. But, after about an hour of messing around with it and setting it up, I really found some things I like in this amp.
Channel 1 is sufficient. Channel 2 is still the money shot for the 20th to me, just like the 34. But, I hear some stuff with the 6L6 that was there with the 34's. With the gain maxed on Blue, it sits right there where one needs it. Channel 3 I think is where I was originally missing the 34's, but with a little knob twisting and switch flipping, it really comes alive. Not huge or massive metal tone by any means, but almost just right for my AIC/Metallica sort of requirements. Neither channel gets woofy or muddy with the 6L6 regardless of how you dial up the bottom end. I haven't opened it up yet, and assume it is filled across the board with Chinese 9's and JJ 6L6's.
I order this fucker loaded with every option. Plus, I upgraded to a Plexi shell with bronco tolex - not that girly girl comet crap. Anyway, I think it is going to hang around for a bit. Things might get interesting. I've always had something Bogner hanging around here and have been through quite a few Ubers, Shiva's, XTC's and a Fish. I must say the 20th 6L6 is a bit different and in a good way.
