Hey guys... So, I love my Gower Killer Kali.. it kills in everyway. That being said, I have at least 1 gig a week til October and want to pick up a good deal on a 2nd amp as a backup..just in case the Kali has an 'off' nite :D Don't have alot of funds so looking in the $1000-$1200 range used... don't necessarily need a clean channel (barely ever use it anyways and I can always roll back guitar volume). However, need a really good dirt channel and prefer a footswitchable master 2 or 2nd/3rd channel for my lead boosts(since I play lead guitar)...not against boosting the amp with a koko/mk 4.23/etc... but would prefer a master 2 or extra channel for this. My band covers everything from Classic Rock to Modern Rock... ie: Van Halen/Journey to Alice in Chains/Theory of a Deadman. Amps Ive been kinda thinking about but haven't played...

- 5153
- Mesa Mark III Blue Stripe
- 'maybe' a quickrod(tho my guitar player uses one and Im not all that inspired by the tones..its an older model)
???

Would love to hear any opinions or input regarding what may be a good amp to pick up. Like I said, it'd be used as a backup to my Kali and/or a practice amp at home. Thanks.

Try the 2012 or later Quick Rod or Super Comp. I am not jazzed by the 5153 at all. Maybe a Fryette Sig: X.

I'm not sure what a Gower sounds like at all. If you don't like the older QR I doubt you would like a new one either. I have a Sig X and love it but the Fryette stuff has it's own sound and feel you will either bond with or not. Shouldn't be too hard to find a good second amp in that range.

These two amps currently for sale on TGP would likely do exactly what you want - if not more - at the right price point.....

If neither of those pique your interest, I would also suggest a used DSL 50 or 100. Great prices and good tones. Perfect price point for a "back up".

BTW - I have no affiliation with the sellers of the two amps on TGP, but just thought I would point them out. Given it's minty condition, the MKIV is a killer deal!

How about a JVM210/410?

They have great dirty Marshall tones that would nail what you want. Plus is great for foot switching channels and has a second master volume (foot switchable) for leads!

I love mine!

The Fryette Deliverance and Sig X have definitely peaked my interest.. seems like A LOT of amp for the $

Keep the opinions coming. Appreciate it!

Hey Neighbor..from one Wisconsinite to another I had a lot of compliments on the 5153 50 that I had..and those used can be had for 750 or so..you can use both dirty channels as main rhythym and one for lead boost. I like the VHT stuff that I've tried as well but they aren't Marshall enough for me..def more modern..they sound cool but I just like the Marshall sound better. The 5153 is a decent take on a Marshall and a good backup for the Cali IMO. I've only had Splawn modded Marshalls so I can't compare to a QR..but the 5153 is cheaper and I think sounded at least as good as the Splawn mods I've had. Good Luck!

Thanks bro... Yeah, I don't want a more 'modern' sounding amp.. I don't do metal(anymore), 7 string stuff, or brootz as the kids call it :D Like the classics, love the 80's , Alice sounds great for the modern stuff. I do know that Eric Friedman from Projected and Tremonti uses a 5153... as well as Clint from 7dust.. so the 5153 can get modern if need be. I just don't want a overly saturated 'lost in the mix' type amp. Somewhere in between would be ideal.. since I like a more playable/softer amp.. but don't want it too compressed. Cheers

As stated above: 5150 III 50 watt. $750 used, small footprint, sounds killer. I use it as my main amp (Gasp) in my cover band and it will do what you want it to do. Go play one

I don't think the Quickrod would be gnarly enough for you. Perhaps the Nitro??

Thanks.. Had a Nitro... didn't do it for me. Had no 'character'. Very sterile to me.. at least a few years ago when I had it.

I had a 5153 100W. Great head. You get the goods in ch 1 and 2. A compressor and tele or Strat will sound great for older stuff. A guy on the forum bought it and is still gigging it, I think.

For simple sweet good tone, I would just get a DSL100. They are 6-700. You can mod it yourself by instructions off the Marshall forum to put the clean/crunch selector off the faceplate and in a foot switch.

I bought one as my wet amp and general backup. Now it is my main practice amp with a few pedals. And it was dirt cheap...

WIN!

So many to choose from.

The Diezel DMoll seems cool, but I've never even seen a Diezel up close. So no help here...

Grab a JVM and i'll mod it for you Cory

Hey Dan.. that would be great... it's just the damn shipping and duty tax that would probably put me over my budget. Just send me one of those mods you got lying around    But yeah, a mod would be great and I KNOW I would dig it... plus add a little different character and voicings than my Kali. Hope all is kicking ass my friend!! Cheers

It's most likely very cool.. but also very expensive(for me) and outside my budget.
