So, I just scored a 78 JMP 2204, Now I need a cab...I'm debating on just going the 1960 route. But I honestly have no need for a 4x12. (used to have a JCM800/1960a rig)

Thinking about getting a good 2x12 cab instead.

Whats gonna be the best sounding/cheapest route? Avatar or Whitebox?

I wouldn't mind an Orange or Recto cab, but honestly not a huge V30 fan.

They don't seem to get as much love here as the "name brand" cabs do, but I bought a couple of Avatar 2x12's for my rack rig. The service was great, delivery was fast, price was right, respectable build quality, I got orange tolex ( ) and they were loaded with a classic lead 80 and vintage 30 combo. They sound great and look killer

I was thinking of the avatar route myself, but a contemporary 212 shipped is nearly $500. Too me that's not really much less than an orange with much better resale. I'm stumped!

i have a avatar vintage cab in white with black hardware/grille cloth and celestion g12-75's. build quality is great, and the sound is awesome too... i would definately recommend avatar cabs for a budget. i am thinking of buying another 1 or 2 myself.

u can find used marshall or orange 2x12 for $350-400 bucks and if u ever have to sell it is easier to get your money back. Also easier to gig with and transport around , up stairs, alleys, etc with a 2x12 over a 4x12

You can find used cabinets quite frequently - getting one is a different story. Cabinets go up for sale on here all the time, but 75% of them are "local sales only" and the other 25% cost an additional $100 to ship. The OP doesn't list a location, so they may or may not be in a gear-heavy area. I live in the middle of a frickin' corn field and NOBODY sells any quality cabinets around here...

Pisses off the corn worms

yeah, like someone mentioned, Good cabs are hard to come by at a decent price around here. the 1960 are a dime a dozen for $350-400 though. Or cheap 4x12s a la Peavey, Crate, Line6, etc.

I do wonder about the Jet City 2x12, Lucky I can play the JMP thru my JCA2112 cabinet to see how it sounds.. Maybe thats a route.

You nailed it there!! I'm in SC and its not uncommon for younger players in this area to see you pull out a VHT or a port city and say he man I've never heard of that, you really need to try one of dem mesa boogies! Nothing against mesa products and no snobbery intended at all, everyone just lives under a rock!

Yeah Mark I'm pretty worked up over those! Man I got to sell these 412's

Here's what I would do. It's actually what I did do. Take an old 2x12 combo. Something you bought when you needed a cheap, durable amp. In my case, an SS Crate. Then, put good speakers in it. Cut the speaker wires. Wire a 1/4" male phone on the ouput of the amp. Get a plastic project box. Drill a jack hole into it. Wire it to your speakers. Then screw it into your inner cab wall.

Voila! A durable 2x12 cab. Plus you can plug the phone jack from the head into the speakers for a shitty backup.

I'm a little lazy for such an undertaking

This is true, u can find old solid state or hybrid combos cheap, many times they will have the older uk made celestions, and u get an entire amp cheaper then u would find a cab
