I've been a convert to semi/partial/flex/convertible 2x12s for the last 7 years. I had a Marshall 1936 for years and then a Port City Wave OS 2x12 for about 2 years. Then a Splawn 2x12. All were great for my gigs, but once I played a partial open back cabinet, a Mojotone, I couldn't get past the directional nature of the 1936 and even the Port City. I move a lot on stage, so I was missing the highs and mids when I moved around. I don't play super crazy djent, so I like some thump, but doesn't need to be super tight.

they were both great, but I kept the POB because I liked how it breathed more on stage and was less directional. I eventually sold the Bogners. I tried the Forte S/V: sold it. I'm now using two cabs:
-Stagecraft Diagonal 2x12 with upper back open
-Voltage 1x12 with the lower back panel open (Canadian company no longer in biz)
Both sound great, but the Voltage sounds absolutely HUGE for a 1x12. it has the same depth as my Stagecraft and most 4x12s at 14". But it sounds BIGGER than my Stagecraft at lower volumes, and I'm wondering if that is because it has the partial open back at the bottom vs top like the Stagecraft.
So now I'm wondering what my Stagecraft would sound like with the opening of the back in the middle or bottom. Still sounds awesome and thumps at gig volumes, but I'm intrigued by FLEX backs where you can have the opening at the top, middle, or bottom.
Anyone have experiences with Flex backs and the tonal differences? What about Oval backs vs. rectangle flex backs? Why do some cab builders use oval for partial open back?
Cheers!
