I posted about this over in my dedicated 4104 thread, but figured it deserved a thread of it's own for separate discussion. Today I removed the mids cap from my 82' 4104. It comes stock in the combos, but is absent in the heads. Supposedly it's supposed to reduce the upper mids of the amp to compensate for the combo format increasing them. Well not supposedly, it definitely does that, but whether that's the reason why it was put there can be debated.

Lay It Down:

Every clip is using my detuned 4x12 loaded with two EV Force 12's, with a 57 on the edge of the top right speaker's dust cap.

Has anyone else tried this mod? What'd you think?

I use to have a 4010 combo with that cap and a few 2204 heads without it. Each one sounded a bit different into the same cab, but I'm not sure how much of it was from that cap (IME some 2204s are just bassier or gainier etc than others for reasons that I can't explain).

Seems with lifting one end of the cap just to see if you prefer it with or without.
