Are these a lot different? I like my 498T a lot. I pretty much want the same thing with less treble in another LP. Will 490T do the trick?

I'm not a LP guy anymore, but I always loved the classics which I believe had the uncovered 498. I never cared for the 490 at all in any of the LP's I had that had them. I know that's not a comparison, its been too long for me to remember specifics. I liked the classic '57 much better than the 490, but that's probably getting too mellow for ya. I just remember not being impressed by the 490.

Just for shits, you might try slapping a cover on a 498. That will sometimes tame the "zing" of the top end on uncovered pickups. You already have the pickup so it wouldn't be much work.

Never tried a 490T, but I have a 490R in the neck of my LP studio. I really like that pickup, very chimey and full sounding. Sounds like a les Paul should in the neck position. The 498T I find to be thin and bright, just not much meat there. I am trying a Rio Grande BBQ in the Bridge.

I am not sure I would like a 490 in the bridge. I would probably go for a '57 classic over the 490 in the bridge....

I already have 57s in one guitar, I also have 490 in neck & it sounds great. BTW all of them are covered.

I'm mainly interested in comparison between 490 & 498 in bridge or something that sounds very similar to 498 with less treble.

I think the Classic had the 500T, a hot ceramic pickup.

Try putting a ceramic magnet in the 498T . I did it and it was the thickest tone I have ever heard out of a pickup.

Where can you get magnets for pickups? I have seen a website somewhere showing how to do it, but didn't bookmark it

From what I understand, its pretty common for people to take a Seymour Duncan Custom and replace the ceramic magnet with an Alnico 8 Magnet.
