+4db or -10db on the back of the amp. Which one...and why?

My amp is not even here but I've been curiously wondering if I even have it set where it should be

I only have a few pedals out front and a delay in the loop

What should it be set on??

+4 is line level, -10 is pedal level.
What are you putting in loop?

now that you know what line level and instrument level is...if you think about it...
if you set it so that your fx loop isnt matching...

ie for example amp fx loop to +4db lineleve and you put instrument signal/pedals in the loop...the amps fx send (+4db) will clip the pedals (-10db) input...and the pedals output (-10db) wont be enough for the amd fx return(+4db)

just wondering, if you have say 6m of cable running back and forth from the amp (making 12m total) , would +4db be more suitable?

depending on the pedals of course, so as to compensate the long cable run

There seems to be a lot of talk about this lately, probably a lot to do with Jet City amps.

I wish I'd taken into account that that Blackstar Ht100 (is that the amp you own? I remember it has a switch) had the switch to go between the two settings for line and instrument level.

Not to hijack the thread, but can someone give me a rough estimate as to how much it would cost to get my tech to mod the effects loop to -10db (It's a Jet City 100H which runs at line level, +4db) He's quite reasonable and I assume it would only be a simple mod, cap changes, that kinda thing.

Thanks for the replies

I believe it is set to +4 because I was running a G Major in the loop. I've now ditched the rack FX and just have a pedal board and a few pedals....so I need to switch it to -10, right?

Also, will this quiet things up switching to -10? I noticed that I have just a small amount of noise I never had as well

thanks guys!

For the Splawn loop I would run +4 for everything and only go to -10 if any pedals you are using flat out won't work correctly otherwise.

google - ebtech line level shifter

you can also use a DI box inbetween each send/input and return/output, with the DI box set to pad/lift the levels

just thank the heavens you dont have a line level (thats 0db) AND parallel loop, which i have battled in my framus amps for so long.
all i can say is thanks to eventied/tc electronics for having pedals that have switchable in/outs AND kill/dry functions
