Hello all - while I have been at this rock and roll thing for 25 years, I have yet to own a 4x12 cab - I have always gone the 2x12 route. However, now is the time to get a 4x12 and I have two choices.
Used 5150 cab in the mid $200's
used JCM 800 1960A in the mid $300's.

I do not want to go on the speaker swap journey - I just want something that is built well and sounds good as is.
Any feedback on either would be great.

Amps feeding this will be a JCM800 2203, Splawn modded plexi, and Marshall 6101LM.

5150 cabs are built like a brick shithouse and sound great

1960's are built well and can sound good as well.

Not being a fan of gt75's , which a lot of the marshall cabs are loaded with, I'd personally go with the Peavey.

Whichever one has the speakers that best work for you, unless you plan on switching them out. If so, either will suffice I'd say.

Id say the Marshall box. The 5150s came loaded with alot of different things. I dont like the sheffield loaded ones. All in all, I think the 5150 box is scoopier sounding than a marshall with T75s. Im not a big fan of the 5150 cab. They built well though. Probably better materials than the marshall. Im pretty sure the peavey cab uses 1 inch birch while almost every other cab (including mesa) uses 3/4.

I can't stand those Sheffield speakers

If those are your choices I would go for the Peavey. I personally dont like GT75's, and actually do like the Sheffield 1200's that should be in that peavey cab.

5150 cabs only came with Sheffield 1200 (5150) speakers. Other Peavey cabs used other speakers though. The Sheffield 1200 speakers were Peaveys(and EVHs) attempt to copy his old, very worn in Greenbacks. They are rated at 75 watts each. I've played my Splawn Competition and VTM(pretty close to a JCM) with both of those cabs side by side and can say I don't really have a preference on the sound. I wouldn't pay more than $200 for the Peavey though. $350 for the Marshall is cool. I'd probably go with the Marshall. It's also a bit lighter in weight and would probably be easier to sell if you ever did.

Anyone here know much about the quality of the older Peavey M412 cabs, the ones with the metal grill? Materials used? Birch? Someone gave me one many moons ago, been collecting dust in my garage. It does have sheffields of some sorts in it, I know that much. I'm not corncerned about those spkrs though, I'd swap 'em with something better, but that's too much work for results that are unknown (some cabs sound like ass regardless of speakers, lol). What I'm getting at is, I took the England made G12T-75s out of my trusty old (1990) jcm 1960A a long time ago (have greenies x v30's now), maybe those would sound good in the Peavey as an alternate cab? Thanks

I used to have one of those Peavey cabs, but I never opened it up to check construction. I had it with a Peavey transtube supreme SS head. It was a pretty solid cab. I am actually curious what the materials used were.

As for the original question, my vote is for the 1960A cab. Easier to sell in the future and lighter.

I like the Marshall cab.

Some of those cabs have the G12-65 speakers and not the 75's. If so no contest I'd go Marshall...

i had one of those cabs, I sold it, It didn't sound great. I t had 3/4 plywood for the cab, and the back of the cab was MDF.

Thanks for the input on the older Peavey cab!
It would sound better with good speakers, but those Sheffields, were not very good. I'd replace the speakers with the V30's and G12-T75's and see how you like it.

I am about to remove the V30's and G12-75's from my brand new Bogner Uber cab, if you wanted to go that route without having to hunt down any speakers. PM me if interested.

This is easy. Marshall

If anything, it will match the heads you are using, and most importantly isn't Peavey

I'd go with the Marshall cab, I hated the way my 5150 cab sounded.

Marshall. It will cut like a knife with the 2203 and Splawn. I happen to like the 75's...
