Just got a lopo signature series 4x12. Awesome work those guys do. Anyhow, I don't know if it's just that I'm used to a 2x12 but the thing sounds boomy.

Here's what I got and what I did
WGS
2 Veteran 30's
4 British Leads

I wired them so the top 2 go to one jack @ 4ohms and the bottom 2 go to another jack @ 4ohms.

Now when I play the V30's up top they sound kind of harsh if you will, sort of breaky I guess? They sound good with the 6 string, but not the 7 string xiphos.

However when I use the bottom 2 speakers as well (british leads) the whole cab gets boomy.

So, as an experiment, I put the british leads up top, threw in some Celestion 12T-100's in the bottom. I'm again, liking the top, but when I use all 4, same thing. Boomy.

Any ideas?

Perhaps throw the v30's in the bottom?

I'm more of a midrange / highs type of guy. I don't like a ton of bass and the boomy thing is pissing me off.

What do you think?
So, celestion 12T100's up top = good with only 2 out of 4 speakers in cab running

British leads up top = good with only 2 out of 4 speakers in cab running.

However, as mentioned, no matter what speaker in bottom = boom boom.

Any ideas appreciated.

I have a Randall RM4 and RT 2/50 Power Amp

Density on power amp is off
I'm using the recto or treadplate module with a xiphos 7. The bass is at 12:00

Any lower the tone loses clarity.

Any other ideas wiseass :D

Yeah it has castors, I don't have them installed, but they are the easily removable type. I'll try that.

What about egg crate foam inside the cab and or a baffle between the top and lower speakers. Some cabs have a wooden baffle separating the top and bottom, mine does not.

What say you?

12:00 is a lot of bass on most high gain amps in my experience, especially if you're using a freaking 7 string. I would definitely try getting used to it turned down a bit more. And I find it odd that lowering it would cause you to lose clarity... usually the opposite is true.

I'll try that again, but as I remember it did not do much to solve the problem.

With 2 speakers live only in the top and the bottom 2 disconnected it sounds great. However whether it be vintage 30's the british leads or the Celestion T-100's in the bottom it gets boomy. Sucks

What about the foam padding inside, anybody ever try that trick? I heard it solves the boomy problem but can also mess with the clarity as well?

Definitely try the casters...they will help.

Also, turn the bass down. I use a Grail module and don't think I ever turned the bass above 11 oclock...usually closer to 10. And I like a good bit of bass in my tone

If you are moving to 4x12s prepare to dial your amp differently; less bass, more mids

Try mixing your speakers in an "X" pattern instead of having two of the same on top and on bottom

I have a CAA 2x12 that was very boomy the very first time I used it in band practice. Before that it was just low volume. After about 10 hours of busting it's cherry, the boom is gone. I don't know if that is your situation.

Wish I tried the X pattern first but what solved it is using 4 british leads in the speaker.

I'd like to try the X pattern, but after swapping speakers for the past 3 days, about 45 minutes per swap with the removal, wiring, putting the back on again, I'm so fucking burned out I just want to play.

Do you think it's worth my while to try the X pattern? That boomy sound sucked ass. Thanks for the replies.

I've heard it works for others and mixes the sound of the speakers better. I can't say for certain it'll fix your problem. What another poster said about breaking in your speakers might be the problem as well, if they're brand new.

Sometimes the actual cabinet can be the problem and you will beat yourself to death trying out different speakers.

What I was thinking................

IF you are using just 2 speakers in an 4x12 enclosure you have a lot more space and that is effecting the charateristics of the speaker's movement.

HAve you tried using the cab with all four speakers?

Like I said, I have the V30's in the top and the BL's in the bottom, all wired series/parralel for 8ohm total load.

Result = BOOMY CRAPPY TONE

So, as an experiment, I wired up the top at 4ohm and bottom as 4ohm and tested them separately. With the V30's in the top, the boom is gone, but I find those speakers to be a bit harsh. When testing the 2 BL on the bottom, there was no boomieness but lack of clarity of you will.

So, last night I pulled out the V30's and put in all 4 BL's and the result =

I just wish I had tried the frign X pattern before I went through all that. Now the V30's are in my 2x12 and all 4 BL's are in the 4x12. I'll pull them apart again as I have to see how the x pattern will sound.

Thanks for the replies guys.
