50 watters get me that power amp crunch that sounds good for classic tones when cranked. I can "get by" with 50's for high volume metal playing, but they always leave me unsatisfied.

Got it. I sometimes wish i had a hundie for shows but my 60 watter is already too loud for recording

I like high output pickups with the 5153... tried a few lower output and it didn't feel right.

Out of the EVH's, my favorite tone is the 100w channel 2 (tightest channel of either amp). The key is not turning the amp gain past noon and finding a good OD for the higher gain stuff (I like the Maxon OD9 or the BB). The OD adds gain but more importantly it tightens up the amp, more so than just turning of the amp gain. I ONLY use channel 3 on either version for leads. The cab I prefer is a 4x12 Mesa w/ V30's. I'm a big fan of tight rhythm tones.

Not to start anything, but I like my early version 100w more than the later models. It could be the EHX/Sovtek tubes that came in these. I'm not a big fan of the JJ's that currently come in the amp.

I totally hear what some people noticed as flubbing out of the low end with the 50w and the matching 2x12. It is very apparent when I play my Charvel with Duncan Custom Customs. My Ibanez guitars with Dimarzios (Tone Zone) sound tighter. My Les Paul Classic with a 500T sounds great also. On the other hand, I have never heard this "flub out" with my 100w with any guitar.

I'm having a debate with myself about this right now. I have two guitars that have the EVH Frankenstein pup's in them. They are considered high output I guess about 14k. I'm noticing they kind of sound strange with the amp. Almost like there's a little octave effect in the background. It's really weird. I've read in a couple of places where people have been having issues with these amps with guitars with high output pup's. I have two other guitars that have EMG 85's in the bridge and they sound great with it. The 50 watt and my 100 watt. I'm pretty sure they're about 14k as well. Strange. Considering trying out the EVH Wolfgang pup's. They were basically made to go with the amps I assume. Really odd about the Franky pups with this amp.

See, all of my pickups are high or relatively high output. Even my McCarty, since it's a one-off has really hot pup's in it. My guitar with the EMG's in it sounded really off to me. I'm gonna try to get another cab to try out this weekend, but I'm not holding out a whole lot of hope. I have a Sparkle Drive Mod on its way in to try out as well, we'll see how it goes.

May just have to save my pennies and look into a Rhodes or something along those lines. Just wish there was one I could try out locally, because those are a whole stack of cheese more than the EVH, and that was one of its (evh) big selling points for me.

^but worth it. Also, fwiw, i played a 5150iii 50 with blackouts and it sounded awesome. Through a mesa v30 412.

I've read about the high output pickup thing too but damned if I'm personally experiencing that. I've been recording some great tones with 14k pickups (Super Distortion and also a Custom 5) and even an Air Zone (17k). Go figure! Maybe those are considered med. Heh. I think what some owners are really saying is just try and stay away from Alinco 2 pickups in particular, not necessarily "hot", or "high output" models.

+100 on this.

I would definitely try it with a more standard speaker/cab. The p50es and vht cabs are really well-made but other than the time I played through Bob Savages deliverance with a vht cab, I haven't been real impressed with them. One band I play in the guitarist was running a jubilee into a vht cab and I never quite dug the tone. The 5153 is presumably voiced with the evh speakers in mind which are pretty much heritage greenbacks afaik, which are pretty different sounding thatn p50es IMO. Also the d412 is front-mounted where the evh cabs are rear-mounted I believe, etc. All of these differences are pretty BIG factors IMO.

i play mine with a maxon 808 through the matching 2x12 cab that has g12h30's. I play it through a bernie rico heaperian 7 with holy diver pickups. Sounds awesome.

It's got to have something to do with your cab. Now, admittedly I've never played through the 50w, but I run my 100w through the matching 4x12 with an EMG equipped guitar and it sounds amazeballs. Nothing "loose" about it at all.
