Sorry, maybe I'm just stupid. But aren't you supposed to tap them like that to test them?

They are closest to the input so they will be more sensitive and prone to detectable noise. I don't hear anything concerning there.

Return that thing and buy mine like I offered you in the PM you never bothered to respond to when you were looking.

Sorry that I didn't reply. I wanted to get a 6L6 version, since I already have a few EL34 amps.

To be fair, did he have a WTB ad up? Or did you just outright solicit him?

Is this normal? V1 and V2 are making this loud clanky sound no matter what tubes I put in each spot. And every 30 seconds or so, it makes a pop.

I’m gonna assume it wasn’t making the “pop” sound after you unboxed it and played it with the stock tubes but after you started tube rolling ? Even with the stock tubes back in place it’s still making that popping?

It didn't do it with the stock tubes. After swapping a bunch of different tubes around, I figured out that the popping noise happened when I had either a JJ ecc803s or a Sovtek LPS in v2. Both of which were brand new tubes.

Neither of which belong in V2. Long plate tubes are prone to added noise in gain stages, due to their construction. Of course those 2, being long plates.. well.. you do the math.

Really? I read somewhere that the LPS is preferred in v2 by some folks.

And what would be a good spot for the ecc803s.

The Sovtek LPS worked great in V2 when I had mine . It was the MIM version but not the updated version you have with concentric pots for the green channel

Well to further confuse things, I just popped in a set of Winged C 6L6GC’s and  No more of those annoying hi’s and they brought the mids forward a bit.

See, now I've read all over the internet that different power tubes didn't make much difference.

Only one way to find out. Everyone hears things different too. And some can’t hear at all.

No tube is going to transform it into a new amp but it’s all part of the recipe. Just like the cabinet you’re using. Swapping speakers will make a more noticeable change than any tube will.

Ive owned both the 6L6 stealth.... and the EL34 Stealth.
Both are great but dammit if that EL34 Stealth doesn't just rip your face off!!

Where the 6L6 stealth was like getting hit in the chest with a sledge hammer. :D

Didn`t you say it sounded great in your other thread when you got it a few days ago ? I`d just leave it as is , play it and have fun .

I have some Tungsol 6L6-STR's, and some Ruby STR's I thought of trying, but figured they'd be brighter than the JJ's. Might be a good thing for channel 2.

Right now, I'm running:
V1 Mullard CV4004
V2, V3, V4 JJ
V5 Tungsol
V6 Ruby
V7 JJ (balanced)

My only complaint is the amount of gain on channel 3. Didn't really care for a 5751 in V2, V3, or V4. But, I live on channel 2. Channel 3 as a lead channel only, but channel 2 works just as well.

Yep, it does sound great. I'm not really looking to change it. Mostly I'm looking to do 2 things. Quiet the hiss and maybe lower the gain a bit on channel 3. Otherwise, channels 1 and 2 are perfect.
