As Im getting to know my 5150, Im learning it eats preamp tubes up fast. Or maybe its just very sensative to the performance of the preamp tubes :dunno:

depending on how long I keep it.
Must be a Michigan thing

Well, the difference here is I'm just not digging it so far, I'm not THAT big (Dan) of an amp whore
You no likey?

Well, if I can manage to get the lead channel dialed in ok then I will likey :D Amp will be no for sale

Pop some JJs ot TSs in that bad boy

Right now it's got Ruby 6L6s in there but theres no telling how old they are. The TSs are a go for sure though

The last time I played the 6505+ through Heritage 30's it was very honky in the mids, bass lite and bright. If you have a V30 cab lying around I would recommend plugging it into that before making the final call on the amp.

Yeah, I'm not even really a fan of these speakers to tell you the truth, I really am more of a V30 guy but I had to grab this cab because of an emergency   I'd like to keep the cab though and put some V30s in here because it's actually a much better cab than I thought it would be, top notch quality. I think I'll have my buddy bring his V30 loaded cab over soon and test it out, sounds like a good suggestion

The rhythm channel is a bit fuller and smoother on the top end than the lead channel.

The lead channel is a bit more buzzsaw like, but should have a good amount of bass as well.

Volume on ten with gain on 5-6, normal gain input.....load it with Chinese 12ax7's like it was designed around. I don't know why you guys mess around with other shit tubes. TAD 6l6's for power sound great. Not as good as the original Sylvanias though.

If I'm not mistaken, Machine Head uses the crunch channel boosted.

I dont have any issues with low end on my lead channel...and Im using MASSIVE amounts of low end. The things vibrates your whole fucking torso...I think the lead channel is a bit tighter than the rhythm channel on the head, and I like that.

That's right. gain on 10. Boosted with a TS (Flynn) and a Zakk Wylde OD (Demmel)

I'm a huge MH fan.

That's why I like the lead channel, it's pretty tight, I've found the II/+ to have a bit more tightness in the lead channel.

One band I play with I dont use a clean ch so I use the boosted crunch for my tone. There have been some venues that are very dead sounding. Harder to play in. So ill use the lead ch (with the gain at 9:00 :D ) The added compression even with the gain that low helps playability sometime for me. And at that low of gain the lead ch doesnt quite do what the crunch ch does for me. But it works

With my 5150 I found that I liked the rythm channel better with a guitar with EMG:s, and the lead channel better with a guitar with passives...

It must be because the EMG:s are more pronounced and honky in the mids. With fuller sounding passive pickups I think the rythm channel gets a bit to bassy and flubby for my taste. With a boost that cuts bass (or adds mids) passive pickups perhaps would better fit the rythm channel.

I have been cranking my 5150 all day. Such a killer amp to beat on! I just wish the power transformer didn't get so hot

Mine is about to be for sale or trade   Just can't jive with it for some reason, pisses me off to because I really wanted to like it

i have to go fire up my 5150's now. just picked up a minty straight 5150 cab for 100 bucks off cl.

Dammit...this thread makes me want to pick up another 5150.

Screw you guys.

Cut the bright cap on the lead channel and it tames some of the high-end and noise (a little gain too), but makes it a lot closer to the rhythm channel... I do this so that there is only a small difference between channels making the amp more useful.

wow, this sounds like something I need to try. Always loved the crunch channel, but wished it had more gain - sounds like this is a cool mod for what I would like.
