so i love my 5150 iii... channel 3 is insane.

i like the 2nd channel a lot for chords and riffing, but i want to thicken it up a little when playing leads.

what do you use/suggest?

I only have a few boosts.

AC Boost, Jetter R2, OCD.

OCD does not change the feel of the amp much and does the added punchiness. The AC Boost loves other amps, but not this one as much. It sounds cool, just feels more metallic and compressed. The OCD almost makes it sound more open.

The low gain side of the R2 is a very subtle kick in the pants that brings out the feel of cranking it up very loud. High gain side gets kinda randy rhodes going. Works good on ch1 as well.

If you can try a Jetter R2 jump that thing. The 2 boost and dirt flavors are independent so it can give you a boost for ch1 and ch2, so it ends up like 5 gradual steps of gain.

OCD is everywhere and works well. A little cheaper, many less combinations.

Suhr Koko Boost. If you love the tone of your amp and just want to make it bigger, louder, thicker, this is the pedal that will do it...

How much are you looking to spend. There is one thats pricey but its the best I have played. It is its own thing and much more than just a boost but cost three bills. Its a stay on pedal if you want. You will forget its even on its so good.

i'm looking to spend less than a $100... maybe i'll go used

Give the Xotic EP a try. Great to thicken up an already well crunchy tone and send it to lead nirvana.

I love boosting channel two with my Rocket fuel !

No boost needed
You should set the gain to MAX on channel 2
and use your guitar volume to switch between lead and rhythm playing

That's what I do on mine
(100 watts head)

And for answering your question about boosts,
The only boost I use is a BB Preamp original version
I've sold every other boosts I had and only kept this one.
It does everything I need. Sustain on lead forever and doesn't color your tone.
Very dynamic boost.
Could be used as a clean boost or as an overdrive pedal. Very versatile.

i have a bad monkey through mine, use it rarely but it does the trick and is cheap as chips

if you are looking to thicken i like th ep booster or koko idea. If you are looking to fill in the mids and have a bass cut there really isnt anything better than maxon 808. I like my evh 5150 III 50 watt just as much with in on or off its just a nice thing to have. I just got an isp decimator g string which is a must for this amp.

I was just going to suggest this myself. The Bad Monkey does a great job at boosting and is cheap.

Just started using an OCD version1 with mine and I'm really liking it.

So, what is it?

To the OP - I didn't spend much time trying to boost ch 2 of my (now gone) 5150 III, but I can see how it needs a bit of gain and thickness. The best pedal I've found for that is the little-known Fulton-Webb Textosterone. Great pedal!

I've found that a good old TS9 works well with channel two.

Himmelstrutz Under Over is amazing.

if you look at what has been most popular with any of the 5150's in the past and even currently you will find that it is the maxon 808...i think most people over do it by turning the output on the pedal all the way up but then you get a really congested sound and you will loose some of the same feeling and dynamics in the amp. I leave the output at noon on the pedal and the drive all the way off. I turn my amp up as loud as i want it than i turn the gain all the way up. I chug on the strings hard and lower the gain slowly untill i reach that perfect level of gain/clarity. thats how it is done!

I have been using a pro tone dead horse lately. channel 2 is all I use. channel 3 has way too much gain to be usable, fine at low volume but gets gross hen cranked. Ch 1 is fine but I'm not a clean guy at all.

I use the MXR Classic Overdrive to boost my 2nd channel for leads. It's a Guitar Center "exclusive", but features the same circuitry as the MXR GT-OD and the ZW OD...there is a switch on the PCB to switch between the ZW OD sound and the GT-OD sound. the ZW-OD mode is a little thicker, and I generally use that.

Oh yeah, I got the pedal brand new for 30 bucks, too. They are usually 30 or 40 dollars at GC.
