looking to do some tuned down chugga chugga and I'm thinking one of these is the way to go. I would kinda consider the 6505 the way to go give the success of the 5150 at that. BUT the 6505 plus has the crunch channel that is foot switchable which I know sounds great boosted. Just wondering if the 6505 plus hangs with the 6505 for the chugga chugga part. tia!

Yes, but it also depends on what speaker cab you are using. A friend of mine still has his original 5150, and believe it or not, it sounds best through a sheffield cab loaded with 1290's, granted the volume was on 4, and pre was at noon, but it would CHUG CHUG. I have a 6505+ running into an EVH cab with 2 EVH's and 2 v30's and it CHUG CHUGs, but I prefer channel 2, fukn loud, volume around noon and pre at noon, 1 o'clock. channel 3 doesn't need a boost, to me anyway, but I can crank my volume. No neighbors to worry about. Just my opinion.

Plus is tighter, less lowend, not as aggressive. Has a usable clean

Original has a bigger lowend , more of a piised off sound, not as smooth.

Either will do the chugga chugga sound no problem. As mentioned 6505+ is going to be a little tighter and slightly more refined sounding. You also get the foot-switchable crunch and a clean channel that is more usable (I actually liked the clean channel on the plus in spite of the flak it gets).

I believe the plus is tighter sounding and the gain structure is just bit different. Have you thought about the 6534 ?

I have the Plus, but I prefer the 6505. The Plus is great, but the 6505 is just has more mid-range aggressiveness.

I vote for 6505 because of how cheap they are. I got one off eBay for $500.

I liked my old 5150 a lot more than the later 6505+.. both were a one trick pony (the + could be tweaked a bit better for cleans, but, still cleans suck here in both cases).. I'd go the 6505 route.. so not the +.. I could get a decent clean by turning my volume down.. the old 5150/6505 with shared EQ also had more gain available on tap.. Where I'd be on noon on the old 5150 I'd have to boost it to 2-3 pm on the + version...

Either one will be more than sufficient for the chugga chuggas and both can be had for stupid cheap on the used market. If you need a little more versatility then I would go with plus. It's a 1.5 trick pony compared to the 6505s 1 trick.

Do you have a cab to put it through currently? The 6505 sounds better (to me) through a tighter cab (think Mesa traditional) and the 6505+ would sound good with a tight cab but could also benefit from a looser (oversized recto) cab. So the cab you currently own might influence your final purchase. And don't be afraid to boost the 6505 if you find it too wooly or loose unboosted, you might like it better with the boost in the front.

6505+ clean, Ibanez prestige RGD2127Z-ISH, neck pup, vol turned down, amp settings pre, bass, mid, treb, 6, vol, 3, res 4 pres 5. Left v30 with sm57, right heil pr30 evh with fx.

I have owned every version of both....Down-Tuned and Saturated, I strongly prefer the slightly brighter and slightly tighter overall character of the 5150 II / 6505+

Unless something has changed, the huge volume jump between the clean/crunch makes having it footswitchable useless IMO on the 6505+

I leave the crunch on the clean channel on. It's a pushed sound. Gain way back to 9 oclock. Hit the 2nd channel for heavy and hit a Maxon OD808 for liquid leads. It's all very seamless and simple. A little delay for leads and clean stuff. Maybe a touch of chorus now and then. Great rock tones.

The clean channel without the crunch on is very glassy and clean on my rig. With the right guitar it's a fantastic tone. Some delay and it's fantastic. I use it once in a while as well.

I agree.
