Just got some Svet 6550. I can only bias one tube down to 46mv and the other tube down to 66mv?
Do you guy's think it's tubes or amp?

It's the tubes. Take out all the tubes. Put one tube in a socket and adjust it to a 40mv. Turn off amp put the next tube in the same socket as previous and check the number. Repeat with the final 2 tubes in the same socket. If they are off like you state then the tubes are bad. Report back!

This happened to me with some EL34s, but it was AFTER I used them for a while.

Jeff, can tubes "drift" like that?

Jeff,

I'm running (2) GTE34L on the outside and the (2) 6550 in the middle.
I just swapped the 6550's around and still reads the same.
I called the tube store and they said the rating (these have a rating of 50) is two hot for the amp.

Is it safe to take all the tubes out and just put one in? I don't want to electrocute myself :D or fry the amp

Thanks

As I posted. Pull all the tubes install a 6550 in one socket. Bias to 40 turn off amp and install the other 6550 turn on and see if you have the same drift. Rating doesn't matter right now. Please verify and no I would not have posted you to do this if you were going to be electrocuted or blow up you amp.

Did what you said. 1st tube reads 46mv can't go any lower, replaced with 2nd tube it reads 66mv can't go any lower.

Thank you Jeff!

Did you ever get them replaced and try them in your head?

Nope, still waiting to get my replacement tubes. Not happy with how they handled the return.

who did you go with?? I've had problems like that with Tube Depot and others. Never had issues with Dougs tubes, so he gets the majority of my business.

thetubestore. Been using them for years no problems at all. Last three orders have bee all f'd up. Ordered six Sovtek 12AX7's (2) were marked defect on the tubes with a sharpie, time before ordered some Chinese 12AX7's and half had really bad bent pins and one was missing a pin? I think next time I will try Dougs tubes.

Man, bummer  I've had to learn the hard way over the years. Good luck with Doug. I've always been happy with his service and product.

You guys are killing me with all of the 6550 talk in the MTS/Egnater amps. I am contemplating trying something else with my RM50 and I just might have to pull the trigger on some 6550's. Any rec's on brands?

Thought Eric liked the Svets? Mine should be here tomorrow. I'll give a report.

I do like Svets in my RT2/50 and Mod100 for sure. In the Mod50 the TS6550s have the mojo man. That's my personal setup.

Eric

I had problems with tubestore the one time I used them. I have done OK with Doug.

Use Doug's Tubes!

I don't think you have to get too caught up in brand. I know I don't have the time in the day to sit around testing brands...nor the cash to buy em all, LOL.

Eric recommended the Svetlana 6550s for my Mod 50 so that is what I bought and they work great. I ended up going back to EL34s because that is more my thing. I am more into that thick syrupy Marshall vibe than anything and only EL34s do it for me. Using Ruby EL34s now.

When the mood strikes I'll throw in some E34Ls or the 6550s again - biased at 46/49.

I've used thetubestore for like 5-6 years. Have had a bad set of tubes come here and there. But Jon always replaces them spot on. I'm just a happy camper using him...so I have no reason to change.

Eric
