Looking for a seven string American made guitar. Love the Keith Merrow S7, Bernie Ricos, and Dean RC7 custom shop. Looking for feedback from those who know, as I've seen horror stories on line about S7 and Rico quality (S7) and lead time (Rico). Thanks for any input.

You really can't go wrong with the new Schecter Keith Merrow signature 7 for the price.

Carvin, or higher up the food chain, Suhr. Depends on how much you're looking to spend. I'd stick with reliable brands though.

The "great guy" Bernie Rico Jr vanished with thousands of dollars of customer money and is no longer in business. Strictly 7 seems to be taking orders and not delivering anything. If you've got custom shop budget I personally have had good experiences with KxK, or you can't go wrong with Suhr or Anderson. Jackson also has a good custom shop.

I like made in America...I do own a bunch of ESP 6 strings, and they're fantastic guitars, but I'm on a "Buy American" kick right now. I played a Dean custom shop RC7 with a Floyd Rose Pro and a single Bare Knuckles Nailbomb pickup through an Engl amp today...nice guitar with a 5A quilted top translucent purple burst finish, but $3500.00 ? I don't want to spend that kind of money...and the Jackson wait times are just stupid. The Dean neck was really nice, played great...but Suhrs start at 2800.00 bucks and I would imagine they're in a whole other league than Dean.

Pauly, hit up Nick from the Axe Palace on those Deans. He's a dealer and has a bunch of cool ones; he'd prob work a deal.

I'd vote Tom Anderson. I think you could get a Pro Am 7 for less than $2800, but that was a few years ago. I have a Drop Top 7 and it's simply amazing.

Otherwise, for USA-made, Carvin may be your best option in that price range. Maybe unfair, but I couldnt trust a smaller luithers after watching so many crash and burn on ss.org.

That's where I played the Dean, The Axe Palace...wasn't sure if it was cool to mention another store up here...3500 bucks, no deals...that guitar was one of Nick's own personal guitars he ordered for himself...if I wanted just paint and no real options it could drop down into the 2500 to 2700 range. For 300 more I'd go Suhr, but I will look into T om Anderson as well.

I looked at Carvin's website and they just don't do it for me...

I may have to consider non American made at this point.

If I were in the market for a 7-string and I were willing to spend 3k or more, I'd go Tom Anderson or Suhr. No doubt.

That sucks; sorry man. Figured he'd do you right.

If you're considering non USA, consider the new Schecter KM7:

Swamp ash body, flame maple veneer top, 26.5" scale, locking tuners, Hipshot bridge, SS frets, ebony board, SD Sentient/Nazgul pickups, 3 piece neck with carbon fiber reinforcement rods. Bought one and waiting on delivery...under a grand. I got mine for $999 with free shipping and a free case. The above is a proto pic; everything the same but the pups are covered in black.

Aye. Can't go wrong with the km for the price.

Look at a barebones carvin too

Do they offer a Floyd version ? I didn't see one on their website...

Of the KM7? Not yet.....prob be out later this year.

For the money, the KM-7 looks great. If I was buying a $3k+ guitar, I'd have to have a Suhr. That said, I love my Ibanez Premium RG927 and the new 2014 Prestige RG752 looks great and the price is right too. Carvin is always in the mix given the price and what you get. As long as you realize going in that Carvin re-sale is not good. In fact, a used Carvin 7 is hard to beat in terms of value.

I know you're buying made in USA, but nobody does 7 like Ibanez in my opinion. They have something for every ones price range, & their necks are unbeatable IMO.

Dean RC7 and Jackson Broderick have the most amzing 7 string necks. Just got the RC7 myself.

In my opinion no one does the 7 string guitar better than Ibanez. I have owned a lot of 7s and the Ibbys are by far my favourite. Second place would be higher end LTD 7s and for 3rd place I will go with Carvin.

If USA-made is non-negotiable, you can't beat Carvin for the price/quality/options.
