i posted this over at sevenstring.org, but i though i would post it here too

i've got a ESP m-307. great guitar blah blah but the pickups suck so hard. (emg hz)

so i need some suggetions for new ones and for them to meet a few criteria.

1) be better than the stock emg-hzs. they are way too dull and NOISEY!
2) be able to do more than metal (bridge should be able to handle some pretty evil stuff, but the neck i'd like something warm and jazzy)
3) aren't stupid expensive.

i'd like to keep it under the 100-130ish range.

What brand are you partial to? Are the HZs the same size as normal humbuckers or are they the size of the EMG actives?

i'm not partial to any brand really, just as long as they aren't the EMG hz's.. heh

and the current pickups are the soapbar size EMG hzs...here's a pick to help

please ignore the cat....[/list]

Dunno if you can fit a normal pickup in there. Why not go EMG 707s or 81-7s?

What wood's that there guitar made of?

For a brighter sounding guitar, I'd go a Tone Zone 7 in the bridge, and an Air Norton 7 in the neck.

If it's a bit darker, I'd keep the AN, but the TZ would be replaced with maybe an Evo. I still haven't gotten around to installing the Blaze Custom in my RG7620, so I can't comment on that one. It seems promising, but I'm yet to hear it for myself.

With both my UV (Basswood - TZ+AN) and my RG2127X (Mahogany - Evo+AN) I can get a great range of sounds. I love the AN when it's coil split too. :)

Either a Blaze Custom or Evo in bridge, and an Air Norton in neck. Sorted. :lazarou:

yeah this guitar is made of mahogany (my fav body wood)

i've gotten a lot of suggestions on the air norton for my neck pickup, i think i might go with that.
for bridge, i've got an evolution in my ibanez 6 string and i like it a good bit...perhaps it would work for my 7

oh and i'm not a huge fan of EMGs, i just don't think (please tell me if i'm wrong) that i'd be able to get a nice warm neck sound for things besides metal.

Get the Evo then, it's especially sexual sounding in mahogany.

oh yeah, any work on if i can just direct mount these pickups since they are routed for EMGs? code001?

I have no clue how you'll mount normal pickups, hence me suggesting EMGs.

yeah, i mean if i can't mount normal pups i'll just go with emgs...

check this out though, on warmoth they give options for putting pups on a guitar
http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/options/options_guitar_pickups_routing.cfm
direct mounting (apparently became trendy cause of EVH) is possible.

i would assume that i can do that too...though i dunno how great it would look
oh well, keep the suggestions coming!

You could use Bartolini bass pickups. They'll be very clean and if you read their descriptions there are models that will do distortion pretty well.

yeah so after a lot of research and schtuff it looks like i'll be going with the emg 707.

can anyone point me in the right direction of purchasing one? any sales going on? :D
