Been GAS-ing for some vintage Marshalls lately and have a couple on my radar. Looking for feedback and insights from those in the know. Two options: ‘72 and ‘74 Super Lead 100’s. All bone-stock with OG components, running fine and very clean condition. Which way would you go? Why? What would you pay for either? Help me try to choose…..

Sight unseen and equal condition etc., I'd opt for the '72. It has turret board construction and is probably more desirable from a collector standpoint. If I could play/hear them back to back I may change my mind. I haven't kept pace with current pricing. I have a decent '76 myself but wouldn't know what to ask if I were to sell.

The 76 was around the time the pcb was becoming a reliable product. A nice 76 is north of $2k

Mine is in fair shape. The shell is in great condition, it was slightly modded at some point with a master and EL34 conversion. That, and some schmuck drilled an extra hole in the back of the chassis for whatever reason.

I’d want to know the plate voltages of each.

I’d also take the one that looks worse. It means it sounds better.
Yes to the 2nd part and that much more so with guitars. Almost all my keeper guitars have their share of scars

Whichever one you choose OP be prepared to list some other amps for sale after AB'ing with it

Like others have said, the early PCB would be my biggest issue with a 74, thus I’d say the 72 is a safer bet in the long run. Play both if you can, god only knows what values Marshall used in that amp and what stuff has drifted to, both for better and for worse.
And if you can get some gut shots to run by some of the guys here. An unmolested 59 is a rare bird.
