'79 JMP crackling, and question about plate voltage

And I just put the F&Ts back in. I did discover a cold solder joint on the negative terminal on one of the ARS caps. So I resoldered and fired up. No joy. Still sounded dark and not loud enough. Threw the F&Ts back in and BOOM - that's what I'm talking about. This is my baby and I will stop futzing around with a good thing. She's perfect as is. These ARS caps are either just not for me or they're a lemon batch.
Check the dates on the ARS....maybe they have been sitting too long and need Re-forming? When I’ve bought them they are 1-2 yrs old tops. But maybe you are into the F&T ‘grainy’ tone they produce. To each their own.

There aren’t many choices these days. I believe it’s F&T, ARS and JJ.

I go ARS every time. The overwhelming majority feels they are closest to the originals and don’t alter the tone.

I love low plate voltage for Jose mods. They get nice and chewy, not as stiff if you like that sort of thing. My Roccaforte was that low
Thats ironic cuz Jose Arredondo himself preferred high plate voltage amps to work on & often installed his own B+ transformers to boost low plate voltage amps.

Its not that ironic. Just because Jose preferred it doesn’t mean it’s best for everyone. My favorite amp right now (83 2204 Jose mod) has PV in the 300’s. And it will punch you in the chest.

Question about my wiring. As I mentioned, when I went to remove the ARS and reinstall the F&T caps, I discovered a cold solder joint on one of the ARS caps. Wouldn't that have been very noticeable when playing? Still wanting to give them a chance, I cleaned up that connection, fired her up again and played. No improvement in tone at all. So that's when I put the F&Ts back in and they sound fantastic. Ran the amp at full tilt for three hours at band practice the next day, not a glitch at all.

It’s all personal preference. I’ve done these mods on amps from 395v to 545v. There’s definitely a contrast in the tone. Chewy and darker vs stiffer and cutting. Me being a play at home wanker prefers the dark and chewy

Same here. Love the feel.

Order a fresh set of ARS directly from ARS. I think you need to rule out some bad caps.

Nothing puts the hurt on me like a 100 watt JMP except 100 watt JMP all voltage aside.
67' Superbass is the loudest Marshall i ever played, scary loud.
