So two questions:

1) which clip do you think sounds best?

2) do any of them actually sound good to you?

One clip is a Marshall Super Lead boosted with an OD808. Another clip is an unboosted 5150 block letter. And the remaining clip is an unboosted Rev G Dual Recto.

All recorded at fairly low volume just with an iPhone kinda close to the cab.

Listening just on some jogging headphones, the clips seems fairly accurate for what I hear in the room. Probably fairly obvious which amp is which.

None of them sound good to me... For an 8 string you'd need some pretty extreme low-cut (Fortin Grind, VFE Standout etc) before these amps for them to sound tight enough.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely can tighten things up either by adding an OD pedal to boost the 5150 and Recto or tweaking the Super Lead settings (I think these clips, the channels were jumped with both volumes at 6, boosted with an OD808, so I can use just the bright channel etc.). But it's a balance, as I make the F# stuff tighter, the top strings suffer a bit, particularly the top three or four strings start sounding unnatural.

So I've trying to accept that the F# string will not be surgically tight sounding. I have 7 other strings to use for super tight riffing; I'm trying to accept that the F# will be a looser/sluggier sound.

Hmmmm, they all sounded similar/same to me. All good!

Thanks! Ultimately I ended up trying to get the Recto to sound like the 5150, though the Recto stays less compressed and less immediate no matter what. The 1959 kinda does it’s own thing, I think.

Way too flubby. I thought you only played 7 strings?

Started playing 8-strings. They still have 7, plus one more. Not sure what really to do with the extra string yet.

Mostly just playing this guy these days

I actually liked #1 quite a bit.

For the riff type it sounded pretty nasty to me. Reminds me of this at about the 1:30 mark just a bit darker with less gain/saturation. #3 is brighter so that should have been my choice when comparing to Vile but I just liked #1 better.

Thanks man!

#1 is the 5150 and I really like that amp for what it does. #2 is the 1959 and #3 is the Recto

Here’s another attempt with the 1959. More treble volume and less normal volume

I'm not going to pick a 'best' but just to play along I would think:

clip 1 = recto
clip 2 = SLP
clip 3 = 5150

sounds like bass to me :D

That is where I am at. Too old for this I guess. Just about anything tuned lower than D loses my interest.

The second Marshall clip sounded better than any of the first three to me though.

I put a Fishman Modern Ceramic back into one of my guitars and that with a Reborn Triple is just nailing the tight, modern metal tone I think for the F# string.

I’d quickly taken that pickup out and forgotten about it because it was too thin sounding through my Marshalls for the hot rod/hard rock tones that I normally go for. Instead I’ve been using Dimarzio and for as rarely as I use the low F#, I think it works ok.

But for the stuff that uses the F# more regularly, I think I’ll need a dedicated guitar/pickup/amp set up. The Modern Ceramic and Recto seem to work pretty well. I’ll try to get a clip to see if the forum agrees.
