If Becker was playing today, he would probably be talked about as the best to ever play a guitar.

Jeff Waters from Annihilator and Chuck Schuldiner from Death are the first two that popped to mind when I saw this. Too bad Jeff's albums have always had absolutely terrible vocals, I bet that's what put a lot of people off...guy can rip though!

Really? I thought Set the World on Fire had a strong vocal presence and the new guy who has been singing the past few years is fairly solid. It goes with the Annihilator sound, can't see him really doing melodic shred. He does rip though, the rythm playing is so damn tight.

Jeff is also one of the nicest and most humble guys out there. Just an awesome dude.

must not be looking too hard there buddy ;)

I actually just did a search and found very little on several of the guys I mentioned. Where should I be looking buddy?

I'd take Smith, Murray, Mustaine, Downing, Tipton and Gilbert ANY day over Lynch.
All of them except Gilbert have recorded some of the most epic riffs and solos of all time.
Geez man.

Except Gilbert? WHAT? They'd all be hard pressed to play the intro of Colorado Bulldog at half speed and as quarter notes.

I get what you're saying though, they're all better than Lynch.

Scarified? Technical Difficulties? Colorado Bulldog?

80's players you "rarely" see mentioned? You've been at Rig Talk two months.

My first thought, after looking at OP's list.

Chris Poland is ridiculous. One of the 80's shredders that continues to evolve.

Becker was incredible but I don't think you can make statements like those based on speed or technical ability alone. I think his work was more mature with DLR where he let things breathe a bit more. There are tons of guys who can execute those sweeps (Gilbert is one) today. Simply put, there is no "best to ever play" guitar. A lot of these icons bring something unique. Nobody has it all.

Man. I really feel bad for Jason Becker. He has so much talent.
