, etc.? who has played these and what did you end up keeping? and or getting rid of ?
want a hard rock tone, not into nu-metal. no need for 1,000 watts , don't tour anymore. But good tone is mandatory. IF these have a good clean tone is a plus.

The Wizard and the SLO (imo) need plenty of volume to do their thing. No experience with the H&k. The Diezels have the best master of the amps I've tried. Maybe an Einstein would fit the bill for you?

Hughes & Kettner make effin great amps. I love my Triamp, and it does everything that you just said you wanted.

I have to bring up the elephant in the room..........

5150 III

Exactly what your looking for with a great clean channel.

A Diezel Schmidt is an excellent amp. Plenty of flexibility. Gets all over hard rock and has a good clean. I am a choosy mother. The Schmidt is an excellent amp if you are able to find one. Not gonna cover a redneck rock like a Dr. Z but that was not on your short list.

I have an SLO and it does need to get a little bit loud to get into the magic zone. More like very loud. Still sounds great at lower volumes but you know the drill.

I would say spend a month visiting music stores and score a good used deal. Probably will be some Christmas gift returns.

Nothing wrong with a great Fender clean platform and a few great pedals to cover other flavors, Carl Martin Plexitone is excellent and Wampler Triple Wreck nails a beastly Rectifier.

well, it will just be for my own enjoyment in my home studio. I hear what you are saying about volume, so the wizard & slo have to be cranked high to get it to sound good, had the same problems when i had my plexis, than started to use boogie mark 2's back in the day when i was touring. That db's level will cause problem, hhmm. The Einstein clips sounds good coming through the p.c. speakers, but its not the same if you can be in the same room as the amp is being played its not really true. Its unfortunate no shops in my neck of the woods have any of these amps. Wow supersonic your no to deizel, could you please explain ?

heritage softail, u sparked my interested about the fender clean with pedals, can these new boutique pedals give me the hard sound ? i've had well over 30 fender amps, and also the one amp they i should have kept all these years that would work great i think would have been the hiwatt custom 100., But backin the day guys used a fuzz box, than the boss pedal came out, and i did not care all the much for them, too muddy on the low notes. that was then and this is now.

clean tone in the old fender blackface super reverb area if possible

Diezel Herbert. Killer at low volumes n great clean tone.

Buy a Diezel. If you can afford the best why not. they make amazing amps and they are worth every penny. and more.

Diezels absolutely!!!

I love them... Currently have an Einstein, the clips on the internet don't do the amp justice at all... Incredible cleans, awesome rock tones and mid distorted tones through the texas mode on the first channel. Mega mode is amazing for hard rock / metal. I don't play new metal at all and wouldn't say this amp has that voicing either. I play mostly hard rock and this amp is incredible!

Channel 2 has the most liquid gain and is amazing. The amp has external bias points, 2 excellent ultra transperent Fx Loops, the quality of the build is on a league of its own. GREAT GREAT master volume, any tone at any volume. Its a hard hard amp to beat really...

YOU need to go out and play them and decide for yourself. I have played the Diezels and i don't own one because to me they're not the best amps out there. If you want loud raw Marshall tone you won't get it with a Diezel...IMHO. Diezels are more modern sounding and a bit more compressed. I'll say this, If you can play loud you owe it to yourself to demo the Wizard, that amp has more balls than have hit George Takei's chin.

The RetroChannel RetroReck Amplifier has good tone (perhaps leaning toward vintage rock, but what it does, it does very well) and can deliver at exceptionally low volumes. Check out Lance Keltner's video demonstration (with great audio) along with other information and clips at the following website and see what you think:

Here's Lances video demonstration, in particular:

Go ahead and cut through the BS and get the Wizard Modern Classic or the VH4......they are very different, but both sound incredible. Just depends on what your looking for.....here is a clip of one my Wizards:

And here is James Lugo's VH4:

I just noticed that the Destroy All Guitars (DAG) website actually has a lot of cool stuff, especially links to builders of amps with high quality audio/video demonstrations.

In particular, these builders seem to specialize in building amps that sound good at lower volumes.

If you're looking for something more with a Marshall vibe, check out Fargen Amplification at

Here's a couple of the Fargen videos:

That DAG website has a bunch of other stuff that I haven't had a chance to look at, but these clips seemed like they might be of interest. That is, assuming a primary concern is GOOD TONE AT LOW VOLUMES.

Have you considered a Suhr PT100? Does great Fender cleans and hot rodded Marshall tones......
