Great stuff..... guess there is no chance of a gut shot of the Superbass eh?
He barely spoke of it :(

Friedman is the guy who's been in it. He posted what the mods were. I'm too lazy to go find it. But it's on the Metro Amp forum and Tooltabs forum somewhere.

MODS! FRANK LIED!!!?? :D

Wow Adam's tech was in Office Space.

I remember that. It wasent much, a few caps if I remember right. Cant say how many times I've heard that amp was stock, but I've heard stock Superbass heads, they dont sound like that ;)
Thanks

"Its a 1959 late 70s with jj el34s and chinese preamp tubes. It is super lead spec w/ 100k feedback on the 4 ohm tap it has a .68 cap for the presence and a .68 for v2 also the caps out of v1 are both .022s. The amp is biased to 25ma and he jumps the channels with a cable. Dave

More gain with more treble or more super leady sound,  but I am also running a THD hotplate because where my head is at I cant really crank it. I am going to try to use it over the weekend with the Jonez settings to see what I get...

How hard is it to keep your job as a guitar tech for a guy who hasn't really changed his rig in 12 years? This guy seems like he has little to no fucking idea what he's talking about.

I wonder if the drum, bass and guitar techs get together and jam out on the band's gear during soundcheck? I know I would. But yeah... that guy sounded like he was either playing coy or just cluless.

Can you blame him for hiring an idiot...
Look what happened to his last tech
Introduced him to the blueface... fair trade for stealing the lead singer and a few trade secrets to become world renowned himself...
I dunno that's a toughy!

So would you say it sounds pretty much like a stock Super Lead ?

I spent all day messing around with my Plexi .... I also use a Hot Plate to control volume. When I dropped off the bass I could see why he does this .... the amp does not use the extra energy to push bass. As you know it takes a lot more energy to push the bottom .... this gave more harmonics, dynamics and cut. I did not like it all the way off .... but between 9 or 10 o'clock right as it kicked in.

Soon as I hit a open D in drop D with my BF2 set the way it was in the video I recognized the sound. It is the sound used on Third Eye and several others.

It's funny he uses pretty much the opposite of what a lot of metal players use ..... all midrange with only a little highs and lows to fill out the sound, as a lot of people like a scooped sound for metal.

The guitar tech is playing dumb. My jmp definitely cuts better without the bass all the way up. The more bass I use, the more the lowend compresses and smoothens out the whole sound. I like my sound raw ;)

Flanger sound, for most tool songs can be captured with a bf-2/3 with these settings...

manual - very low, almost off.

depth - around noon

rate - around noon

res - very low, almost off.

I dont think you can get a Super Lead to sound like my Super Bass but wiring it like a super lead gets it closer to a superlead in the treble dept, but you still have all the crazy bottom end since its a superbass.

I am pretty new to these non master style Marshall 4 holers, so excuse my shitty descriptions because I am just learning as I go along. I never was really into these older Marshalls till I joined this forum and you guys got me into them.

I also think that is why Adam prefers the older blueface VH4s because they have mids for days, unlike the newer VH4 revisions.

He's smart in how he runs his rig. Two amps, each filling in what the other is missing. Marshall = mids and top-end. VH4 = bass and gain. Put 'em together and you've got the best of both worlds – a raw, mid-heavy grinding tone that's still saturated and has plenty of low-end. Can't do it with just one amp.

If I were Adam's guitar tech I'd be all cloak & dagger evasive to perserve the "secrets" and my job!

I'd love to have one of those Virus synthesizers (floor model). Very cool.

I don't think they make 'em any more. At least not the Indigo.

  Good point!

He has to be playing dumb or just wasn't into doing the video for whatever reason. As a touring guitar tech myself I know every aspect of every amp that I have on the road.

Thanks for the post!! Took me till today to find the time to watch 'em both... I think the tech for Jones is a bit crusty...maybe picking up some vicarious ego from being "Adam Jones' tech". I found the attitude and the run through of the bass line up way more comprehensive and the dude was way cooler - just sayin'.

Peace,
V.

PS - I gotsta say, this bit on Adam's rig has fueled my notion of running a 2x15 cab off one of the leads of my VH4S - (4x12) + (2x15) for some serious added depth... Hmmmmmmm ;)

I agree ... one amp only gets part of the sound. He seems to have a bi-amp thing like a bass rig or PA going on. The Diezel compressed with it's great low end and then getting the most of the dynamics of the Marshall. Best of both worlds. I knew this before .... but it is becoming much clearer.

I about drove myself nuts with trying to get a multi amp rig to do too much. The phase problems from switching channels, instead of using it as a giant single channel system using the guitar volume to control the sound. That and the ground loop, etc problems that come up.

Makes sense to me .... I feel the amps without a master are the best amps ever ..... but I like having both. Part of the problem of describing these things comes from the fact that all the old Marshall's sound different. I do not remember the Super Bass having a lot more bass .... but it has been a lot of years since I have plugged into one.

That is what I experienced ..... and think this is the case with Frank.
