Hi guys...this is my first 84 floyd rose (the trem arm is attached to the assembly)...all my other floyds have arms that you can unscrew...how can I loosen the arm so it swings and doesn't just stay in one place? Do I have to do that through the back of the guitar?

The arm just screws into the 'housing' (as Floyd Rose refer to it in their diagrams), so you just need to unscrew the arm. You might find that the housing assembly spins as well, in which case you need to get some pliers to hold it tight while you loosen the arm (it'd be worth tightening the assembly at the same time).

the 1984 trem comes with a wrench that holds the assembly.

I always hated messing with the older floyds.
If not 'just right' then slop... :(

The 84 Floyd arm assembly looks like the Peavey Wolfgang to me. So if it is you need to loosen the bolt underneath in the cavity to loosen the arm/whole assembly. Do not just loosen the arm without doing this. I've broken arms off by doing that with the broken piece inside and it was a bitch to get out.

So tighten the arm. Flip the guitar over. I use a ratcheting screwdriver with socket on the end. Might be 9mm, not sure. Find one that fits. Then using the supplied Floyd wrench with one hand hold the nut that the arm screws into on top. Then back off the bold underneath a big. Now the downside. After doing this you need that Floyd supplied wrench every time you put the bar in or take it out. With out it it'll just spin and never tighten. I misplaced one once and couldn't use a case for a while. I couldn't loosen the arm! Luckily I have a gig bag I used instead. Guess I could have bought a little wrench somewhere. I found it eventually and have another around somewhere. So I wasn't worried.

If my directions seem tough to follow just google Peavey Wolfgang instructions for the arm. I literally can tighten or loosen a Wolfang arm in less than 5 seconds. It's not hard once you do it.
