So after 2 years as a landlord I’ve decided that business is definitely not for me, and I think I’m gonna use my free time to take on a couple students locally. Should be nice to make a little extra cash doing something i enjoy. So for anyone who teaches or has taught, any advice would be great. Where do you like to start out? More hands on or more “paperwork” type basic theory stuff? Good price point and length of lessons? As a player I’m mostly a rock guy but I dabble in everything. Pretty basic theory knowledge, probably have more to offer technique wise than theory wise but i do plan to brush up on that aspect of my playing. Any advice is much appreciated.

I've never taught lessons but have had friends that have done it. I play by ear and never learned but somehow ended up playing in bands since 86'. In my opinion, would be great to have a balance of theory, scales, etc. but then a focus on some of the "fun" things up front to keep their attention. I'm the kind of person that hates history, math, or anything else until someone explains WHY I need to know it. If someone told me "learn this E Minor Scale", with no reference point, my ADD would kick in and I'd get bored. But if someone said that same thing and then played an Yngwie solo. I'd get more excited about where that will lead.

Good luck man!

Teach what they are interested in. Every student is different. I find best results to find their interest and teach them something they like and the specific techniques as they come. I teach mainly older guys and don't teach young kids because I can't tolerate kids bullshit.

So if they like AC/DC start on techniques and chords based on a easier AC/DC song.

The secret is simple, make them enjoy it. If they don't enjoy what you teach them, they will flop.

Also LISTEN to them for feedback on you and ASK if there is a better way you can communicate with them so things are easier.
