My Brutha's and Sista, I know we've
discussed this to the point of nausium
but I need your advice.
I want to Boost the front of my Splawn
Quck Rod for a Ballsy, Grindy tone while
not coloring my tone.
My guitar is a Les Paul Custom with a JB Bridge.
BB Pre amp, Maxon, OCD, etc...what is the best for the job?
I want to run it chained with an ISP Decimator Pedal
to keep the Hiss at a minimum.
Thanks!! Rick

If you're making your tone more grindy/ballsy, aren't you by definition coloring it?
If your amp is plenty ballsy/grindy enough on its own, why do you need a pedal?

Not trying to be a smartass, I'm just not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish.

My fave is the Maxon OD808.
I use 1st gear OD1 gain around 11:00. Then I hit it with the OD808.
Level 100%
Drive 11:00
Tone 11:00

Didn't try the OCD, but I didn't like the BB Preamp with the QR.

Just what I was lookin' for.
I've always heard great things about the Maxon
and the Timmy Pedal too!

Looking forward to see what you
other guys use with great success.

I really Like my OCD for this reason. Whenever i kick it on you dont really think to yourself that it sounds like theres a pedal adding to your tone, it just sounds like your tone beefed itself up a bit.

Love the Suhr Koko boosts mid feature in front of my QR. That pedal is genius!

Inca, i'll have either a Tim or a Timmy for sale here in a day or so. i just got both new, and will keep one and sell one.

with that said, it's been forever since i've had a QR, but i think maybe the Barber DD is good with the Quickrod?

No problem. :)
I find that it adds basically what you're descibing. Grind etc...
The BB is very transparent, but it was more of a clean boost and I experienced too much of the glassy highs with it engaged. It's nice on certain amps, but the QR seems to need a hint of compression. Bob Savage once described tone like a saw blade. The QR on it's own is a saw blade with larger and fewer teeth. With the OD808 it's a saw blade with smaller teeth but like 10,000,000 of them. To me it's a great analogy... LOL!

Oh yeah, it doesn't need to be the Maxon, I think you'd do fine with any good Tube Screamer-like pedal.

Oh...so your first reply was serious then.
I was really hoping for dry sarcasm, but I'll take disproportionate rage.

I can't wait for the thread where you find out how much your $150 TS clone colors your tone.

I use the Lizard Leg Flying Dragon and it provides a nice boost without coloring your tone.I also have a Maxon OD808 that I use from time to time, but it tends to lose some of the bottom end.Problem solved when I run the Dragon after the Maxon. The Dragon will also bring your clean channel to life.If you have the patience, you can test out this pedal as I did before I bought it.Check Lizard Legs site and sign up for the TOUR pedal. It will eventually make its way to you and all you pay is shipping to send it on its way after a week of testing. Just MY .02.

Oh crap,I just noticed that he has put a hault on the tourboxes for now.Sorry..Still a cool pedal if u get a chance to try one out.

yeah the Maxon sucks some low-end. But to be honest, the QR has alot of low-end. The Maxon just tightens it up a bit. It's not transparent, but it sounds good to me.

Dont get me wrong,I do like the Maxon. It turns an average high gain amp into a metal machine and it gives a low gain amp a real nice bluesy overdriven sound.

Yup. I love that friggin' thing. I sold one and ended up buying another one a couple months later. It works great with just about everything.

Are looking for a lead boost?

Yeah, I'm not interested in a clean boost.
Lookin' for something when, your rippin' along
and want an extra umphhhh when you switch
for a solo. Sort of like another Pre-amp stage
for a gnarly, liquid lead tone.

The Majik Box Rocket fuel is a great pedal for what you are looking for and it has a 3-way toggle to adjust the low-end; this makes it adapt to various amps quite well. I've also had good success with the cusack screamer and I find that it doesn't color my sound very much, if at all. Lots of peeps also seem to like the Suhr koko boost as well. Another pedal to consider is the tonefreak naked overdrive.

You'll probably have to buy a few and have a mini shoot-out because what sounds good to me might just sound like complete ass to you :)

Rocket fuel is at the top of the food chain for me, but I keep 4 or 5 of my others around for a variety.

Boiling Point Rockbox gets rave reviews. Its actually very high on my list to get..Very expensive too!
