The Aldrich set has been my go to pickups for about the past four years. I'm toying with the idea of something new. Wanted to see if anyone had played both the Aldrich and the Afwayu, and what you felt the differences were. Welcome any comments on the Afwayu and its use for Drop Db style hard rock. Thanks!

The Aldrich is hairier with more saturation. The Afwayu, which is also my favorite pup, is tighter, with a really big low end and sounds huge. Both are very hot and aggressive, but I think the Aldrich is better for rock/ metal, and the Afwayu for even heavier tones. Both are great in their own way.

Agreed...I'd add the Aldrich is more like a 'better' JB without the extreme JB mid spike. The Afwayu is more like a 'better' SD Custom...tighter, more aggressive. For drop D stuff I'd go Afwayu. My Charvel SoCal is drop D with an Afwayu, sounds glorious.

Yeah. Afwayu has a heavy duty bottom and overall thickness. Can be great but for most superstars I prefer JB and/or Aldrich

I agree. It sounds and feels like a JB with an unoriented A5 (UOA5) magnet. When I was swapping magnets in a JB it sounded pretty close

The Afwayu was turning my guitar into a bass guitar. I much prefer the upper mids of the Aldrich.
The one I have now might be a custom wind. Doesn't have the HUGE low end of the first Afwayu I owned. That first one could be overbearing if not careful with the EQ.

Long time aldrich user myself. They are tight , percussive and still have a certain sweetness to them. I love them!

Never played the afwayu

As I said, I have been using the Aldrich pickups in my guitars for a few years now. I was looking at the Afwyu for one of my Les Pauls. Just a diffrent flavor. The Duncan Custom was my favorite pickup until I moved to my Splawn. It didn't get along with the amp. Actually, my amp is extremely pickup on both pickups and pedals.

I'm glad to see so many positive feelings about the Aldrich's, I rolled the dice on a pair for my PRS Singlecut. It's an older 2002 with no weight relief. The stock #7's are too woody, and lack the clarity and punch I was looking for.

I think the Afwayu ‘might’ be too overpowering for a Les Paul…might be hard to dial out the lows. But if you aren’t happy it’ll get snapped up quickly as they are pretty sought after, and Wade is swamped with orders from what I hear
