One of my faves for sure. The darkest "all heroin, all the time" album that readily comes to mind.

Amen. One of the best albums of a really amazing era of resurgence for REAL rock...

From memory of what Jerry told me, Dirt was a mix of Bogner Marshall, Fish, Dual Recto & a 5150 that Eddie gave Jerry. He layers everything ALOT. lol

Its such a good album...and the did it in like 6 days or something..and every solo is a one take.

How do you know that?

I personally love all the AIC albums including "Black gives way to Blue". Can't wait for a new one hopefully sometime early to mid 2013.

Dirt was about the only thing classified as "grunge" that I would listen to when it came out. To me, it's just good music, so I forgave the silly grunge label it got.
I've never considered them grunge. I think they were labelled that because they came out of the Seattle area when the grunge scene there was so huge. To me, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, ect... are grunge. AIC are METAL!!

AIC is one of the best bands of the past 20 years. Generally speaking, I think their albums all the way with very few exceptions. Even the new one was great. Excited to hear the next!

There isn't a stinker in their whole catalog. "Black Gives Way to Blue" is one of my favorite recent albums. I'm really looking forward to new material as well.

Dirt is AWESOME, but I'm a Facelift fan first.

Same, HOWEVER! I downloaded Dirt about 10 years ago and didn't realize the track listing was messed up. It had "Down in a Hole" right before "Would?". Totally different experience that way and IMO, a much better flow.

You only think that way because you've only listened to mainstream grunge. If you listen to the rest of it you'll find AiC is par for the course, and certainly not the most metal of the crowd.

All time classic IMO. Read many interviews w/the producer, Dave Jerden. Very layered tone; Bogners, Mesa, and even a Rockman which is easy to hear.

i think the grunge label was bullshit, the music stands up 20'years later and it every bit as intense and unique as it was then.

name a band with better more haunting harmony vocals than Chains

I had read someplace else that he had a prototype Dual Recto for this album recording. My guess is that Mesa was looking for current, name players to endorse it and wanted Cantrell to try it out. Cantrell probably felt too strong an allegiance to Reinhold Bogner to switch... well... that and the Fish was an amazing pre.

And straight from the horse's mouth, Jerry used a Bogner modified Marshall amp for the tones on Facelift and Dirt.

“I used a Reinhold Bogner–modified Marshall exclusively on Facelift and Dirt,” he says, referring to the Alice in Chains albums. “I love that sound: clear low end with a lot of growl that doesn’t come at the cost of definition.”

I guess that confirms it then? I can definitely hear the growl he's referring to, particularly during the verses of Them Bones.

If you can't hear how layered this recording is with different amps your deaf.... Come on guys.
