Alder or mahogany?

which body wood do you like more?

I'm going with mahogany body and a maple neck on the Suhr I'm ordering in a couple of months. I've always had alder body/maple necks in the past but want something different this time around.
 
I voted mahogany since my favorite guitars (Rands) are solid mahogany, but alder is awesome in its own right. I don't think you can go wrong with either of them for a hard rock/metal guitar.
 
Just had to chime in again... My gut instinct was to say ALDER, because to me, "Strat" and "Alder" are kindred spirits :D

But then I sat back and thought about it - I own 2 ESPs, an FR-II and an NT-II. Both are mahogany wing (body), flamed maple top, and maple thru-neck design. And whaddya know, these are my shredding metal guitar (FR) and my drop-tuned axe (NT). Ebony fingerboards! Go figure. So now I also have a Suhr... Basswood body, curled maple top, solid maple neck, and this is my funk, twang, blues based guitar - so what the HELL was I doing spouting about Alder?!?!?! :confused:

I've yet to try a mahogany super strat for an extended period of time, but I always felt like my Alder super strat left something to be desired in the chunk department for heavy stuff. It sounded nice and all. Definitely tight & clear, but it didn't have enough balls. If I were to spec out a super strat again & give the mahogany a go this time around.

But of the two choices posted, Mahogany all the way for me. It has a lot more beef and girth to it IMO.
 
In metal, the bass is there to give the guitars balls, but most metal guitarists try to do everything and drown out the bass.
 
I'm playing through a solid chunk of mahogany right now and I'll never turn back. I'm dying to try a mahogany body, maple top and maple neck. :(

I love both woods, but for a super strat there's just something about alder that does it for me. Ash is also a nice ss wood.

Even for long scale guitars, like Strats and Superstrats- I prefer the warmer, fatter toned woods like Mahogany Koa etc.

You can still twang in single coil modes but Humbuckers have more character change IMO, and these woods often give deeper,warmer tones and need less EQ .
 
Alder !

mahog for your type of music.
