Aldrich hotness

Not the dude, but the pickups.

How hot are they? I have a PAF Pro in the bridge of a LP with an ebony neck (the guitar is a bit bright). Looking to replace it with something else since it is a bit bright there. Had a pearly Gates that I had to yank out. Way too bright with a 500K pot. Should have tried a 250K as I liked it with the tone control about halfway, but sold it before I could try.

So how do the Aldrich pickups sound in a LP Custom style guitar? Can you roll back the volume on the guitar and clean up a bit?

They are definitely hot pickups, much hotter than a PAF Pro. In a LP Custom, they are killer sounding pickups and they clean up very well.

However, if you are looking for a less bright pickup, i don't think it's the right choice.. It's pretty open/bright sounding IMO.

Thanks. I like that they are open and clean up well. This is what I need in a pickup. Maybe one of the other Suhr pickups would be a better choice? SSH or SSV? I imagine these have the same characteristics of the Aldrich in a less hotter pickup?

I'd try a Rio Grande BBQ. Nice and warm, about 12k, alnico5, they're one of my favorites.

Aldrich's are designed for a LP style guitar as that is what Doug plays. The DSH+ would be worth looking at. If your not familiar with it both coils have set screws to adjust the output of each coil, also making it smoother which you might like with a bright guitar.

Yeah but your rig is all top notch and sounds great. Impossible for me to tell what the pickups are adding to the tone in the limited time I played your rig. Also I never rolled the volume back to see how it sounded.

Seems like people agree that even though they are hot, they clean up well. That is probably most important to me now over how bright they are. I have no problem rolling a tone down a bit if I have to. I play a tele, it's what I do anyway. Just never had to do it with a LP.

Do any of you guys use a treble bleed or 50's wiring with the Aldrich's in a LP?

I was a little surprised at first. I thought they would be like a flame thrower. They are on the hotter side I guess just not as hot as I expected. A little soft too. Nice tone and great cleans. I replaced one of mine with a JB. Way more presence.

I don't consider it very hot. My LPC had an anemic bridge pickup, which was also overly bright. It simply didn't match the neck pup and was overpowered by it. I replaced it with the Aldrich and the guitar is now balanced. It is not too bright or too hot. It simply balances my neck pup perfectly, but that could just be my guitar...a 35th Anniv LPC with stock electronics.

I had a BBQ in my '73 LP custom before I had the Aldrich. To me the BBQ 'sounds' hotter, and had more thickness and growl to it. The Aldrich was clearer and more balanced.

I have since pulled out the Aldrich in my LP custom (had a SD Jazz in the Neck) and am looking for something more PAFish. My LP custom is a very thick and mean sounding guitar, so I don't think I need something this not. My LP standard still has an Aldrich set. Also, the Aldrich splits really well, so if you have a way to split it, give that a try. I ran my Aldrich split in my LP custom a lot.

A Duncan Custom Custom is the perfect match for a bright and/or thin sounding guitar.

I just put a mcp detroiter in my lP studio, and it just rips. open and big with a really tight low end(which means not enough bass usually for me); but not the case for this one. The high ends got a really smooth texture that let me use more treb on my marshall, which not the case with any other pup ive tried...
It replaced the '78 custom shop in that guitar, which is really cool in its own right, but the detroiter just has some mojo in this guitar...
