I'm listening to it now, I would never guess that's a 5150. Doesn't sound anything like one.

And that Lee Jackson I played didn't sound anything like their tone, it was really weak and thin sounding. Didn't have that much gain at all.

its a 5150 man...remember, a lot of factors play into the tone...who knows what kinda cab they used, how loud they recorded, what kinda room the amp was in, what microphones were used...at lower volumes with the gain and resonance turned up pretty high my 5150 gets pretty close to the tone. doesnt nail it but its close.

and you have to understand the Lee Jackson preamps they use dont have a ton of gain themselves...Alexi originally used an SD-1 to boost his tone, then used the Jackson JE-1000 active electronics, then after his Jacksons were stolen he used a clone of it (MM04 or something...cant remember at the moment). so their tones are boosted. not sure about right at this moment though...ive seen pictures of Alexi using some new guitars with Duncan Blackouts in them, with what appears to be no boost circuit. i hear the Blackouts are pretty high output (as the old LiveWire metal was!) so he may have retired the boosts.

I wasn't doubting that you were wrong, I was just saying that's one of the last tones I'd guess was a 5150. His tones can be alright, but nothing I'd ever go for.

I think the Lee jackson and PSA 1 were mixed up allover the HateCrew album.. I can definitly hear lots of the LeeJackson tone but i dont think the Lee Jackson was the only thing used.. They started using PSA's during the album after HateCrew and they use it on the bonus footage on the trashed lost and strungout ep disc. So im guessing they mixed the PSA in and probably EQ'd it a bit to blend in with the LeeJackson tone?

i can see them mixing the tones...definitely. but i still hear more Lee Jackson than PSA-1. Are You Dead Yet? (album after Hate Crew) sounds like there may be PSA-1 on it as well, but still sounds more like a Lee Jackson IMO...the tone is too smooth sounding to be PSA!

when i saw them live (which was right after Hate Crew came out) Alexi's tone sounded nearly identical to the Follow the Reaper tone.

man...i HATE talking tone like this...i mean, i love it, but i hate not being able to find concrete sources for this stuff! ive tried for hours before trying to find info on anyone and everyone that uses a PSA-1, even for just little overdubs, and its hard to find anything! although i have found a few cool bands from Norway or Finland who use them who arent famous LOL

oh, and finding Roope's old project Waltari on Youtube...theres some stuff from a tv show in Finland they played on and it sounds a lot like PSA-1 (and Roope has said he likes the PSA-1 distortion LOL)

some Waltari with Roope! and all these tones sound very similar to a PSA-1...but i cant find any confirmation on it.

You sure Something Wild is 5150?

pretty sure...thats what all the research ive ever done has said. but like i also said, its hard to find concrete proof of some of this stuff! i did my own tests to see if i could get a similar tone to Something Wild with my 5150, and i can...although using a guitar with a cheapo pickup would help! LOL lots of different factors at play i think...not just the amp.

Amazing what layering/multi-tracking can do dude.

hatebreeder tone i like, the lee jackson tones im funny with.

the first album (something wild) was a 5150. everything after that is Lee Jackson, just with different poweramps as Code said. Follow the Reaper sounds like theres some PSA-1 mixed in as well, but i cant find anything to confirm this...i just hear it in there!

was a Powerball really used on Sixpounder? i thought that album was all Lee Jackson into a 5150? whatever it is, Sixpounder rules

I'd say follow the reaper was loaded with psa-1 - alot of stuff that was coming out of studio abyss at the time was - thats one piece of gear i should NEVER have sold.

Alexi used to use an SD-1, but after getting his Jackson RR's with the active electronics he quit using the boosts, as the active circuit had a boost (as well as EQ switches!)

but yea...you can throw a tubescreamer or SD-1 in front of a moderate-gain, Marshall-type amp and achieve the tone...adds a bit of that midrange that Alexi has going on. pretty easy tone to nail with a Pod XT using the JCM800 model with the TS model boosting it

hmmm studio Abyss...ill have to look into this more. i love my PSA-1...sometimes i get annoyed with it, but i have my Rockmaster and 5150 to switch between as well, so if i get tired with one thing, i just hook something else up! got the PSA for 125 bucks too...talk about a steal!
