Played a 1974 Gibson SG today and played really nice, sounded great, and just an overall great guitar. The only downside for me was that it was in a tobacco finish. I wish it would have been ebony and might have snagged it. :) Don't know if this was a great price but it was selling for about $1600. Didn't think it was too bad.

Opinions always differ but for me once you get past 71-72 I don't have much interest in Gibson before the 80's again. Like any guitar, if it speaks to you, your hand loves the neck, it sounds great, only you can ascertain it's worth. I know there's some gems from the 70's but I find them to be anomalies rather than common. But I've played a few 60's SG's where I thought who would want this...and it's a few thousand!? No era is a guarantee of awesome or suckage. See if you can get it cheaper and you can always get it re-finished.

If you just stumbled upon it maybe wait to see if a black one from the same era shows up down the road. There's a lot to be said for that you got to play it in your hands though vs finding a black one that you get online without playing it...

sucks doesn't it..

LOL! Like most guitarists, I have my mind on several purchases so not to worry. :D :D :D

I actually started looking at prices of guitars and there are plenty around cheaper than that and like you said, there are better years.

-I'm the same way,... I'm surprised it wasn't cherry..
-my favorite SG's have 2 full octaves, the added range just seems to complete them, check out the ALL AMERICAN'S SG-1/SG-X or the maple capped ones like the DIABLO,
-ever play a Les Paul DC/24 fret? alot of hybird kick ass for the buck!!

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing why it wasn't cherry!!? I don't know why but for vintage looking SGs, I only really like those two colors. For modern ones I don't mind if they are blue, green, etc. The tobacco one just didn't pull me in for some reason.

There is some guy near me selling a 61' reissue with the certificates, the tremolo, etc. and I thought about seeing if he wanted to trade for my Les Paul. I dig Les Pauls though and would have to end up buying another one. LOL!
