Just got this off Reverb.. been wanting a Gibson Custom for a while to play and maybe as a small collector investment deal. Couldn’t really get into all the Historic stuff but happened to come across the LP for a good price, the Modern. The trans black color caught my attention and the top looked really nice. Couple of things I wasn’t sure about, the Apex headstock volute and the Gibson modern weight relief which probably would qualify this as a hollow body or semi-hollow, just without f-holes. Once the guitar got here and I pulled it out, my doubts went away.. I thought the Apex volute was kinda’ cool looking in its own way and I’ll never have to worry about the Gibson headstock snap and honestly, I dig the weight relief because the guitar is super comfortable to play. I guess I can forget the collector/investment plan with this one, because I haven’t been able to put it down. It did come with finish checking, cracks in the finish that basically went up and down the top following the wood grain weirdly and there’s some checking on the back and a little on the neck. Hopefully, this isn’t a bad thing or anything to worry about.. I guess it’s got some age, being from 2017, just seems odd that it happened already. Read through some forums that it’s pretty typical though with these Gibson nitro finishes and I guess people money for that stuff with Murphy Lab and what not, just that the checking here on mine happened naturally, so I guess that’s a good thing? I dunno, curious to know what everyone else’s thoughts are here on that and just overall thoughts on the Gibson Custom Modern LP… thanks!
