Im not sure how Harmony works for most of your typical rock stuff. What are the most popular intervals and how do you go about constructing them?

Could you also tab out some examples or charts to show me how to do it on my own?

Grazie!!!

Harmoized major scale...
As in you play say a line that goes g,f#,e,d,f#,d,e over a Em chord...
the scale would be...
e,f#,g,a,b,c,d...as in E minor/Gmajor
now grab yourself the rockingest of all intervals :) a third and play the same line you get...
b,a,g,f#,a,f#,g
or
a third down...
e,d,c,b,d,b,c

And if you want to hip it up...
toss a fourth in there with it like...
e,d,b,b,d,b,b

yeah kage, as ed said 3rd and 4ths are prolly most common. sometimes harmonies dont stick to one particular interval tho, they might bounce around. when i write harmonies in my own music i tend to do it this way, just kinda using my ear for what sounds hip against the note i am trying to add the harmony to.

i know you listen to Mattias. he pulls harmonies from thin air alot. usually without staying true to one particular interval. no smoking man. its really not affecting me at all, except maybe.... i been eating alot more  but yeah i dont miss it. i think i quit a few weeks before you. even smelling people who smoke now just makes me wanna puke.

Still cranky as hell...I miss it like crazy.

It is cool to have another guitar player lay down the root so you can play the 3rd or 4th over it.

Fun stuff for sure and I have not quit anything so I am doing ok, thanks for asking :D

I generally do most of my harmony work in thirds. The hardest part is making sure that you are using the "right" third for the progression as a whole. I tend to try and visualize the chord that the harmony would be a part of and go from there.

Here ya go Kage...a quickie line, then harmonized up a 6th. In other words I went down a third and just played that an octave higher....

and just the gitfiddles...

Thanks for that Eddy!! very cool stuff, Im going to start harmonizing like a freak now!!!

Kage - I tend to use 3rds more, but I love hearing roaming/intertwining harmonies. I usually write and/or work them out, but my wife just KNOWS what works and what doesn't. Here's an example of a 3 part harmony she recorded w/out working out any parts...(wait for the chorus) http://www.kurgansbane.com/audio/KURGANS_BANE-Martyr.m3u
