Alternatives to casters on a 4x12

Almost any dolly will work. Do you have any size or price limits?

What about those simple ones at Home Depot? Has carpeting and large heavy duty wheels.

Build one (dolly), out of two ply's of 3/4 plywood glued and screwd with casters attached. Paint it matte black and your all set. I just built a drum riser for my drummer and some dollys for our speakers, looks and work great.

Cheap to do too, if you got the skills and tools. Home Depot has you covered for this.

I routed the contour for a nice finished look.

Do it.

Harbor Freight dolly has some good casters on it, which can be used as is - I have several - or removed and placed on your own/preferred base:
