Hey Guys! I posted a 12-space ATA Rack case for sale on my local Craigslist for $200...and someone replied with asking if I still had it, and I told him that I did.
This is a series of emails between us. Me in Blue and Him in Red

Hello

Thanks for the prompt response,i would have loved to come check it out but i am presently out of town...If the present condition is ok, i will love to make an instant purchase,so pls do withdraw the advert from Craigslist,i don't mind adding an extra $30 for you to take the advert down from craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via check, and it will be over night payment due to the distance .You don't need to bother your self with the shipment ,i will take care of that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.

1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential.
3.Your phone number.
4.zip code
Regards.

Mr Collins

Hi Mark, thanks for your interest in the 12 space case.

But I have some other preferred payment options.

1. I accept PayPal if you currently have an Acct.
My paypal acct is **Edited Acct**

2. If you'd like to overnight payment, I'd prefer you use a Postal Money Order or Cashiers Check.
But if you still want to send a check, I'll have to wait until payment clears before I agree to send the Case.
If you can agree to this, I have no problem taking the Ad down and giving you my Address.
Thanks,

-K

I got your mail. As i said ealier, i will need your information as it will appear on the check, please give it as follows so that i can send the check to you as soon as possible:

1. Your full name
2. Your address
3. City/Location
4. Zip Code and telephone

Please send cashiers check or money order to my place of business.

**Edited Name
**Edited Company Name
**Edited Address
**Tempe, AZ 85281

and if you are sending a check i will wait to send the case until payment clears.
Which City are you currently located and where will the Case be shipped
?

Hello
A check of $1990 will be sent to you. You will receive it soon.
Once you recieve it , take it to the bank and deposit it, and once you get the money , remove the money for your item and you are to send the rest of the funds to the agent of the shipping company and the shipping company will come to pick up the item.ok

I am sorry for any inconviniences this might cause you.ok
How much does the item weigh???
Expecting your reply soon

Hi Mark, Please provide me a phone number to reach you. I need some explanation on why I am doing this.
I'm not comfortable with depositing a check for that much and removing funds that have not cleared.
I do not want to be responsible for $1990 if the check does not clear.

Hello, there is no problem with the check, i believe will clear from the bank ok you dont need to be afraid of anything ....

The Case weighs about 40 lbs.
I have a few questions.
1. Which bank will Funds be dispersed from?
2. Which shipping company will you be using?
3. Please provide me any References you have to confirm I am not being Frauded.
4. What is the name of your Company?

I have not heard back from this guy in the past 1.5 hours...who was previously very prompt in responding!
Should I not even trouble myself with this, and cancel the sale??

Definitely sounds like it to me

I feel like anytime someone wants to send you more than the asking price, it's most likely a scam. This guy is trying to send you $1700 more than the asking price, which is an immediate red flag to me.

The oldest scam in the books. Anytime anyone sends you more money than you asked you should question it.

The check will be bad, your funds you send won't be and you'll be out the dough.

I don't trust it. This is a common scam - the extra funds, the "shipping agent", etc. I have walked from sales like this before.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. This wouldn't have made it past e-mail one for me. Tell the guy to fist himself. :gethim:

There are some fantastic threads over on Birds&Moons where a couple of aggressive forumites string these types of scammers along and drive them insane. I didn't realize how common this type of sh*t is....but there's a ton of this stuff going on around C.L.

Either drop all communications with him, or go along with it.....get his check....and do nothing with it except talk about how you're doing exactly as he's asking you to do and share the emails with us!!

Bait and Switch scheme. Don't bother taking it to the bank when you get it.

I am here in the LA area. When I posted on craig's list I had about 15 people just like that contact me. It is those scammers that send the same shit to your e-mail: The ones that say they are kings and need you to transfer millions of dollars. I was selling a rack case aswell and he told me not to sell it as he was very interested in the instrument.

Get his information and tell him it sounds strange and you think you should report it to the police. You will never hear from him again.

I'm blown away that you even have to ask this question. This is one of the oldest scams in the book...
