Bought my USA ML brand-new in '82. It was my first real guitar and it still blows away almost anything else I've tried over the years. Dimebag kinda' made it a metal guitar, but I knew I had to have one after seeing Elliot Easton from The Cars holding one in a magazine ad way before that. The shape might be kinda pigeon-holed as metal, but it's a killer mahogany guitar in every respect.
Ya, Dean is kinda stuck as a metal guitar brand now, but it was Dime that really put them on the map, so it ain't really a bad thing I guess??... it's just that they don't get much attention or respect outside the metal circle. It's too bad because Dean's are fantastic rock, blues, anything... guitars.
Personally, I just have a Korean import, but it's still one of the best sounding guitars I have played. It's really fat sounding and resonant, even with the floyd... and this guitar never goes out of tune, which I love. Everything about it I like, and it's making me want to get another.
At first I didn't play the ML that much. I bought it, played it a bit then it sat in it's case for a couple years. About 2 years ago I pulled it out of its case, dusted it off. I had to set it up properly, cause the thing was not playing well... A truss rod adjustment, dropped the action a bit, put some 10 - 50 DR's on it, adjusted the intonation, got a better trem bar with collet put on it, then put a Bill Lawrence l500xl in it... Now the guitar plays and sounds absolutely fantastic! The guitar was just not setup properly when I bought it, so it just didn't play well at the time. Now it is one of my favorite guitars.
