What would you guys say is the best PT, OT, and choke for a 50w plexi? I am going to build this summer!

I've heard good things about Heyboer, though I'd be curious to hear more opinions on this. Hoping to build some EL34 based amps this summer as well.

Look at mojotone. They've got a good selection. Also heard great things about mercury magnetics.

Merren Audio. Chris's transformers are excellent. Exact clones of the early Marshalls. Some say they are better due to better winding techniques. You cannot go wrong. Chris is super knowledgeable and experienced and is no novice to the amp world. He goes back doing mods, etc. for twenty years plus. He'll talk to you and help you if needed. Call him up. He'll explain to you the differences between his and other brands. I was surprised at how crappy some of the best selling transformers are today. He explained to me the exact wirings, laminations, and the all important winding techniques used. I would say his transformers are great. Mercury mag can't hold a candle to his.

thanks guys. I have a heyboer from mojotone in a amp already. Really dig it! Just looking around for the best option for a 50w plexi.

Dan Gower suggested to me Hammond also

You said you wanted th ebest. Hammond uses very thin wire and laminates. They are known to overheat. There are stories about them melting plexi panels. If you want the best a mass produced is not gonna get you there. Merren or Marstram are known as the best in the vintage amp world. Fairly priced as well. A 50 watt will run you 160 plus shipping from either.

I've built a few amps with hammonds and i have to say i've never had that issue at all. They ran at pretty normal temperatures and sounded excellent. Excellent price to.... ;)

I like the power transformers that metro use to have with the dual voltage option made by hoeyboer for them. Marstran are also made by hoeyboer to his spec but they are nice. I have never tried a merren but know that they are supposed to be the best, I plan on using one in my next build. If price is a concern then Hammond and classic tone might be for you.

I built a 12 series plexi with Merren Transformers and choke, they sound great. Chris was very helpful and always replied to emails and phone calls when I had questions. They are a little pricey but well worth it. The metro spec Heyboer transformers are great also

I've used Magnetic Components in both a 50 and 100 watt build. Sound great and are extremely well priced.
