Splawn Quickrod  I just bought one from Scott and Company...This 2010 model sounds awesome...Does all 80's style music spot on

a Lee Jackson amp would do the trick. Others-

Peavey XXX
Orange Rockerverb 100
Splawn Quickrod
H&K Switchblade
EVH 5150 III

How much hair?
Hair spray ot hair products?
Leotards or leather?

The proper recommendation really depends on these variables.

When I go into full metal mode, I always pull out the Diezel Herbert. The Uberschall comes to mind too.

Not complaining but you guys are wearing my Google out!!! :)

There is a XXX at local shop I might go try out and I will keep an eye out for the other suggestions too.

Steve, ummm, how about,

1) no hair (damn follicles)
2) see #1
3) leather (people run when they see me in my spandex cycling shorts)

Thanks guys

Hey guys, i am playing and learning a bunch of hair metal tunes from Cinderella, Dokken, Ratt, etc... and was wondering if you all could throw ideas for amps out that would cover this ground well?

I have owned a JSX Combo and a Marshall JCM2000 50 before, the Marshall did not work for me for the stuff I record but it may work for rhythm stuff.

Any thoughts? Somewhat price conscious. I'm asking here instead of TGP because I really don't want to deal with "buy this $18,000 boutique amp" to go play Ratt tunes at a bar somewhere.

Thanks,

Jeff

do they really make 18,000 dollar amps ??

amp for hair metal?

an early model marshall reissue, add a 39k clipper soldano gain stage, or cascade the first channel's together, boost the piss out of the front of the amplifier with X pedal of choice, run it into a hotplate, add chorus/delay to taste, and then run it through any PA or a poweramp of your choice - recording from the hotplate if you would like.

use an EQ to shape the tone after the boost if you would like.

i honestly agree 5150's have the ability to do the gain thing, but for 80's hair metal, power tube distortion is key, not just pre-amp. 5150's have great ability to pull it off, but i would recommend neutering the balls off a marshall route instead. it nails the tone perfectly and clearly with just enough gain and that pushed polished tone you hear without any actuall compression units other than natural power tube compression.

just what i would do. owning a 5150 II and playing a simillar marshall setup, the marshall ruled in the 80's hair metal game. the 5150 owned in more gain, but was overkill i believe

+1 on the Avenger

or a Marshall 2203 KK would do the trick, I owned one and it rules for 80s stuff!

I owned a XXX years ago and it was one of the best 80's metal tones I ever got. I have a JSX now and the XXX was much better for that type of tone.

I am surprised there has been no mention of the Marshall Silver Jubilee, IMO its perfect for 80s metal.

I also 2nd the Soldano recommendations, but I would add the HR25 to the list if you don't need that much power.
