No modern high gain amp "growls". That sound comes from power tube distortion, which modern amps don't have. Go listen to a stock jcm800 cranked and you'll hear growl.
Wait. What?

I tried boosting the lower mid's with an eq pedal in the 125 - 250 range and it didn't necessarily create grow as much as just enhance the inherent growl in the amp. I was using a schecter c1 classic Jb Bridge, Rebel 30 MkII and celestion 1x12 gh30 speaker, mxr 10 band.

This combo of gear didn't exactly produce too much growl and when I switched speakers to a 1x12 v30 it was enhanced a tad bit, definetly a grittier sound.

Now what I found interesting was the amp growled most on D type chords. An open Drop D chord, D power chord and Dsus2 specifically. It must be the harmonic content created somehow by the notes in the scale? Because I tried other chords/power chords and there was much less growl.

Conclusion? Growl is from the sum of the parts and cant just be eqed in like I thought.

Side note... the Bogner Shiva Growls!

Baron K2 series (in the video below, the K2 channel of the 'dual high gain' amp) is pretty growly in my opinion.

Wow. Yeah, that's some good growl. Sounds great!

lol yeah what he said was nonsense. If you go back and watch the clip of the VH4 I posted... lots of growl. Modern amp. So there's proof 1. And... in that clip the amp was at whisper mouse-fart volume. Zero power amp distortion. Proof 2.

Killer. My old Jubilee 50w combo boosted could get a similar growl through a G12 65 cab...

Shit that thing is a BEAST!

Why can't these new metal bands use this sound? Why the appeal for that sproingy harsh rattling sound for "djent"-sounding songs? It sounds shithouse. YouTube is terrible for it.

Maybe a guitar's resonance is a factor?

When I think "growl" I think of Doug Aldrich's tone on the Whitesnake DVD. It's definitely in the mids.
