Amp Rack Wiring: How to wire? lava? george L? Help!

Okay, so my rack is ( FINALLY!!!!!!!!) Starting to come together. It consists of:

2 VHT heads
Furman Power Conditioner
Line 6 G90 Wireless
RJM effects Gizmo Audio Switcher
Korg DTR2
In the Future, Plan to add axe fx****

Only pedals in the rack will be a boost pedal, and maybe 1 or 2 other pedals (holy grail reverb, EVH phase 90 etc)

With a fairly simple rack, which way should I go for wiring? I haven't found much info on what people like to use, especially the guys that have some CRAZY setups, and cables going EVERYWHERE! Should I go with the George L or Lava kit and do everything custom? Or will buying lets say, planet waves patch cables suffice? If anyone could give me links to what I should look at, that would be appreciated greatly. Thanks!

You need to make your own cables so they're the proper length. Buy bulk cables and connectors, plus a good soldering iron and good solder. Mogami is great for this, I've also had great results with Gepco. Nuetrik 1/4" connectors are good and come and different shapes.

eeek....I have no experience doing this. My buddy is into soldering but I'm not sure I would trust him to do this either. Is there any other options? Do you not like the lava or george L stuff???


Another question: when you have that many cables for your guitar rig, How do you narrow it down to where the problem is? Sounds like a hassle already.....

Since I'm such a lame-o with a soldering iron, I've used George L's for the last
23 years. (Though, in that amount of time I really should have learned to solder...)

If you're going the George L route, pay extremely close attention that you are making
the cut to the wire perfectly squared (perpendicular to the cable casing). Use a miter box
if you can. If you do not have the cable ends perfectly squared you can lose signal. (learned
this the hard way. Tested cables before and after squaring with a multimeter).

Chris, get the Planet Waves kits. I have built numerous pedal boards for heavy hitters and toured the world many time over with the stuff. It works awesomely and sounds great. The best thing is, a monkey could build the cables, it is so easy.

I am a HUGE fan of the Planet Waves cable station stuff. My entire rig is wired with that cable. Sounds good too!

Anyone have any idea how many of these I should buy for a simple rig like this? Of course, I guess I COULD sit down and count it out....that would probably be the most accurate Does anyone find they need more than 2 kits for a small rack rig like mine?

I had completely wired up my rack with George L and like said before, even after extensive checking when making the cables, some of them were going bad or didnt stay connected properly. I just bought 50 feet of mogami cable and an ass load of neutrik ends from redco cables. gonna wire everything up right this time.

I always had great results with the planet waves solderless kits also. Also you can buy other planet wave connections but they cost alot when you buy them seperately.
