Just wondering what anyone elses thoughts are for recording Thrash tunes (tight and aggressive), what amp would you use?

You'll find it hard to believe, but I've never listened to any of those, but judging from a quick youtube listen you are looking for a mesa or an engl cranked pretty loud. Cranked marshall should work too.

Those guys were all using Marshalls or Mesas- I seem to recall the DC 10 was popular back then.
Most of the Marshalls were modded- Todd Langner did the mods for Testament & Exodus- and everyone that I'm aware of, except Alex Skolnick, scooped the the hell out of their mids. Some incredible playing highlighted by some godawful tones!

Of course this was also when every drummer kept the heads on the kick drums loose to give them that snap n crackle sound with no ring. Not the harbingers of great tone IMO, but loved the riffs!

Really? wow...........

;)

Not an Engl fan. I was just thinking about stuff, I recorded a couple scratch tracks with my Mako yesterday, and it got m thinking about other amps to record with.

I'd say a mesa should be a nice compliment to your Mako. Recording is a foggy business, it's really much more about your skills than the amp.

I'm not really looking, just wondering what everyone else would think, I've got a 79 Marshall JMP on it's way to be modded, and my Makoplex, so..... :D

But my first thoughts when I just thought about it, were either a modded or boosted Marshall, and VHT........ Mesa Mark series would probably be my next on the list.

jcm 800 vertical input with 6550s boosted with a ts9

to record?....... Axe Fx

like nbarts says, it's about the skills not the amp

Old school thrash?...gotta go Marshall 2203/2204, with a boost.

I don't really think modern high gain amps are the way to go for that sound, but that's just my opinion.

Actually, my Mark III gets a pretty damn good thrash sound...

marshall 2203 with a boss sd-1 like most of those guys used back in the day.

Yeah, man. We need to tell Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, etc. to quit playing those overly saturated amps and use just AC30s. After all, it's all about skill and not the amp, right?

Yup, that will get there.

All those guys were using Marshalls, either boosted or modded. Savage's JMP can get there from what I remember after Doug did some tweaking.

Great metal tone is built much more from the power section than the preamp saturation IMO. Those guys would get pretty darn close with pretty much any 100wt-er, but that's just my opinion. There are many tools to get the job done. Obviously you don't wanna use a hammer to drill a hole, but there are variety of tools for drilling to complete the task successfully.
