Amp Recommendations? Fortin? Friedman? Other?

Just grab a used master volume Marshall and a few pedals and be done for $1,500-$1,800. My 1980 JMP with a VFE Dragon or Standout out front crushes.

This video backs up my statement

Listen to this man, he knows tone. Charvels and Marshalls!

As much as I love the Marshall tone, I do love Friedmans!!

Ya know......

There's a lot of merit to this approach.
I often think how much money, time and amp flipping I could have saved if I'd just stuck with an nice JCM800 and an SD-1
It's a great sound..

Yea that sounds pretty rad... I have a JCM 900 SLX 100 but it still cuts out all the time and I just had it retubed and serviced by a highly reputable amp tech in the Philly area. I could always just get that looked into again and buy a few more pedals....

I really like my Verellen Skyhammer. Loads of tight gain, tons of clarity, and a great clean. The Rivera Knucklehead amps should get a mention too.

Who is the amp tech? Do you live in Philly?

What’s the overall consensus on Kemper? Would it even be worth including in this shootout?

I’m right outside of Philly on the NJ side... I took my Marshall to Rick at Main Line Music in Ardmore. Super nice guy but my amp didn’t work for very long after it was repaired unfortunately...

Do you play in a band? Can you crank the amp above bedroom level?
Do you go into the brutal heavy stuff or more the classic rock?

My best suggestion is not to overthink it. Its a journey and gear flipping is a hobby. If money matters, just buy the stuff used, so you can afford the hobby.

And another nice amp is the Marshall Silver Jubilee, it has all the juicy crunchy mids you will ever need to slice through the mix. It cab be used for hard rock, classic rock, even metal. Queensryche Michael Wilton used it on the first records and still has the amp for studio work. With a pedal you can reach classic 80s thrash. A very responsive amp especially if you play lead guitar, it feels just right under the fingers.

i've tried the "holy grail sound" that seems to be the JCM 800 + SD-1 or TS9 and i've always preferred my hot rodded marshall style amp.

Man... you have me pondering grabbing that vfe dragon and throwing it in front of my Wizard MCI 50... lead gain with boost not pulled. A little different flavor, a lil' juicier and squishier. Love every tone this amp has in it... love the tone you're getting in this vid... may have to combine the two :D  Cheers

Damn. The options. Ktre, sig:x, and marks are good for cleans. Splawna are great, but if you can't turn them up you get very little potential. Sig and mark are exceptional at lower volumes for me. Then you get into preference. Dry? Go Fryette. Super saturated? Go ENGL. Etc. If you are like most of us your journey will really never end tbh. If it does, you have the right thing.

You know I was always curious on this too... Just got my powered toaster on friday and took it to practice and played thru a randall 2x12. It was ok but in my opinion lacked that percussive tube aggressiveness that I get from my Fortin Cali or my Friedman amps when playing in a room and with a band.. Maybe its too soon for me to really say since im still learning how to use it. For recording I don't think most will hear a difference... I will say it was light as hell, does not get hot and fun to mess with

I would recommend the Krank Nineteen 80 Jr. 20 watt amp head through a 1x12 or 4x12 closed back cab is my favorite for home studio/practice playing. Nice crunchy tone that gets into JCM 800 territory without the excessive volume of a 50 or 100 watt amp head and it also has good clean channel. I changed out the V1 and put a 12AT7 preamp tube to clean up the Kleen channel.

After countless hours of nonstop tweaking you’ll feel the same
