Here's the deal. My son recently moved back to Denver where we lived from 2004-2008. He wants to join/form a band there but doesn't have anything more than a practice amp. His birthday is coming up soon so I want to buy him something that will get him started.

He primarily plays a mix of death metal, 80's power/hair metal, and shred-type stuff. Main guitar is a custom Jem project that I built him for his 15th birthday. I'm looking for a fairly economical choice that will sound decent for the material mentioned and will cut it for gigging. He's a great player but damn near gear retarded...the simpler the rig the better.

Thanks!

price range ? what's 'fairly economical' for some is not for others.

Trying to keep it as close to $500 as I can

Blackstar is the first thing that comes to my mind, not that expensive and according to some sound pretty good.

Used 5153 50 watt? Bugera is the only larger high gainer I know of that sells in that price range.

A used dsl should be in that price range, and those amps can cover a lot of ground in his styles. They can be a great sounding amps if dialed in right.

I really liked playing thru the Peavey Vyper last time I went to a music store.
Sounded pretty good just playing it....Lot of options in that amp....but not sure how it would be with a band.

I'd probably be looking more for a 2x12 combo unless I can get a head and cab in my price range...not likely I would think.

There's a Peavey Ultra+ in the Denver Craigslist for super cheap. If you want a new combo the Line6 Spider Valve 2x12 is a great deal.

Peavy 5150 or a used mesa single rec if you shop wicked smahrt !

Peavey XXX are incredible amps for the money you're looking to spend (you can get the combos for like $400 - $500)

If i remember correctly gary holt (exodus) was using them when they were touring behind tempo of the damned (head and cab of course)

best of luck and let us know what you end up going with!

Randall RM100 3 channels all tube and you can select what your three channels are as to what amp's tone you desire for each channel.. There are hundreds of custom preamp modules available for these and 80% of them are 90% accurate to their designs.. this is not a modeling amp it takes 3 modular preamps that can be swapped in and out for whatever modules you happen to have in your collection so you can have a nice Fender Clean in channel 1 a rowdy marshall in channel 2 and a screaming Engl in channel 3 or as I run mine a specially designed clean preamp that will not distort no matter how hard you drive it , a Marshall swiss army knife module the 59rr custom with which you can get pretty much any marshall tone from any era with proper switch selection and eqing and finally in channel 3 ive got the mighty Jaded Faith UltraLead which is a modular version of the VHT/Freyette UltraLead and it is a bad bad module..
these amps are discontinued and can be had for really cheap prices if you look around I currently own 2 RM50's a head and a combo an Rm100 head and an RM4 4 channel preamp.
Check out www.jadedfaithmods.com or salvationmods.com for info on modded modules for the randall mts line!
yeah yeah call me the randall fanboy:)

First thing that pops in my mind is a Peavey 5150 / 6505 2x12 combo

Yep..

5150
Ultra/Ultra+

Those are going to be the best options in that price range. I have little experience with the Randall but it does tick boxes.
