Ampeg VH140C gain question.

Have noticed there is no change in the gain above 5.

Is this a problem with the amp?

Yeah, above a certain point there's demising returns, but there should be more than enough gain at that point. It's not an incredibly thick sounding amp on it's own, really.

btw how much different is the sound between the speaker output and the preamp output.

dont own a cab at this time so running it to my Tech 21 PE60 via the preamp output.

This is a big no no with most amps. The power section needs a load, or you will likely run into trouble fairly quickly.

I've read it isn't a problem with solid state amplifiers and have used quite a few, including the VH140C, direct into interfaces, using impulses for the cabinet/poweramp simulation and haven't had a problem. It's not supposed to be done with tube transistors though.

Yeah, what he means is that components can burn out if you use a preamp or effects loop out of an amplifier, without having a load on the poweramp output as well. This happens with tubes, never personally had a problem with solid state, but there's smarter fellas on here that might be able to chime in...

Absolutely most difinitely requires a load on the poweramp of any tube amp or you will at some point (may not take long) fry your amp. This is an ABSOLUTE NO NO

It's a solid state amp. No tubes of any kind in the Ampeg VH140C.
