Amps with channel switching delays......(Mesa Boogie)

I use a number of optocoplers in our boards, but they are not audio related at all. Nothing wrong with optos, they serve their purpose of keeping the circuits isolated from each other.

I agree there should be no delay or pop when switching channels, that's the whole point of a footswitch is to switch midsong with the push of a button.

Very cool of you. I am frankly scared to do ANYTHING with electronics but I will give you a call later and maybe you can talk me off the ledge!

No problem, glad to help  In case I don't pick up, just leave a message and I will get back to you asap.
Cheers,
Mike

This. Of course, if there's a problem with the design, it needs to be fixed. Optocoupler by themselves are not bad

Yes, I got the email from UPS that it was signed for by Gary
Please let me know when you get it. :rawk:
Talk soon,
Mike

I think CdS (Cadmium Sulfide) optocouplers get a bad rap because they get confused with phototransistor based optocouplers. Phototransistor analog optocouplers are nasty things. CdS optocouplers (i.e. Vactrols, LDRs), aside from somewhat slow switch times, are fairly benign as long as you keep the voltage across them below a volt or so. They are inherently passive devices and generate little distortion if you use them properly.

I agree  I don't have any issues with LDRs.

The thing I'm tempted to try are those new solid-state relays. The new ones by Clare supposedly have solved the distortion problem but I'm skeptical.

Would you happen to have a link to the data sheet on those new Clare ss relays?

Thanks for the link.
Hummmm, I'd have to throw them on the Precision Audio to make sure they were absolutely transparent before even thinking about passing audio through them ;) I'm sure they'd be fine in shunt applications. Something else to check out.
Cheers,
Mike

LDRs = optocouplers and if you have 45 minutes today, I will tell you of the evils of them as well
Besides (the old, nasty) VTLs one can use AQY Optos, which are fine IMO, Mike.

Cool, I'll check those out as well.
