Amps with terrible re-sale values.

I'd throw Rivera in with that same description as well.

The way I see it is that it used to be pretty hard to find diezel amps... But now (and especially here on rigtalk), there are loads of them, so to sell them, you must drop the price...

Randall RM100s are cheap as dirt and no one seems to want them either. They seem really hard to sell around here.

I have noticed over time that a lot of big name amps have terrible re-sale values. Two in particular... Wizard and Diezel. These are both great amp companies, but seem to have trouble fetching 60-70% of their cost back?

Opinions, thoughts?

I think it's because they are too expensive to begin with and you can get one practically anywhere if you really want one, no?

Wizards are 40% overpriced to begin with. Of course, there is Canadistanian mark up and the custom duties for them being shipped into the US. That is passed on.

Same with Diezel. Buy a Diezel in Euro currency over there (over here) and they are about $3500, depending on exchange. I know, cause I have bought two straight from Mr. Diezel. In the US, you will pay mid 4's for the import and exchange. Also, have a peek on the Diezel forum. You got people buying $4600 amps that can't even fathom the term "bias". They should be buying Mesa's and other self-biasing amps. Then, they get dumped after they figure out that a Blueface won't make them sound like Adam Jones or blow a fuse or have a tube fault.

What does a pair of Levi's 501's cost in the US now, $25? Go to Europe and they will be about $60.

+1 Yes I agree with the Wizards being way expensive!

Having just sold my VHT, I would definitely add it to the list. Mind you, the cost new (like the others mentioned) is fairly steep.

I must have gotten lucky, I sold my VH4 a 6-8 weeks ago and only lost about $650 off what I paid for it back in 2005. So it only cost me $130 a year to own the amp and play a lot of gigs with it. I think I sold mine just in time, shortly after there were a few VH4 amps that popped up on the classifieds here and the prices got stupid low. I caught a rare break!

...and the longer you hold onto an amp or even use it for it's intended purpose (actually playing in a band or shows) can diminish the used value even further. Probably why alot of players have roadcases for their amps if they play out.

Because many will pay a premium for road cased/bedroom princess/hardly used/foam strips underneath the amp condition.

I'm sure this is part of the reason why the trend chaser/fad core crowd treat amps as "hot potatoes", because they know as soon as they get an amp a timer goes off in which they have a narrow window in which to dump it for maximum resale value.

Revisions/updates can drop the used value of the preceding model as well, which is why you see alot of people trying to sell off their amps if they catch wind a new revision/update is coming down the line.

One thing I've noticed is after a new update/revision has been out awhile sometimes there is a backlash against them and all of a sudden the older models are the cool ones to have and their used value goes up.

Not really referring to older/vintage amps, but many boutiques seem to follow a similar pattern.

I think 3 channel mesa boogie dual/triple rectifiers (not the new 2010 ones). I think the new prices a few years back were around 1800 and 1900 respectively. You can easily buy one used for forty to fifty percent of those prices.

You can add Bogner to the list. I tried to sell my Alchemist for $600 for a long time. I got an email from a fella saying I know your amp's worth $600 but I have $500, will you sell it? I told him to come and get it.

Now? Almost everything.

If you bought new, you're taking a beating on resale

all of them!

except for Cameron mods.

Mesa did hold thier value reasonably well before the meltdown.

Mesa has a transferrable warranty, which helps some on their resale value.

Exactly...buying one of these boutique channel switchers is no different than buying a new RV...the second you drive it off the lot, it depreciates 30-40%.

I think it depends on the Bogner model.

Even then it does not seem to matter too much. I got my 20th xtc for a pretty good price compared to what the original owner paid for it new just a couple months before I bought it.

Pretty much all of em, but I think Elmo's take the bigger hit of all

It's not an amp but Tom Anderson guitars resell for so much less than new. Really I don't understand why since they are some of the best guitar available but new prices vs. $1400-$1800 resell :dunno:
