Hi guys,

I recently realized that I honestly feel the best rhythm and lead (especially lead) tones I've heard on any amps are of the KSR Artemis:

I'm curious, are there other amps that do this sound well? Or in your opinion even better?

Thanks!

I own an Artemis II and it is a mainstay, can’t see ever going away. Love it.

I don’t know of any others, there is an aggressive smoothness if that makes sense. It feels good and it’s so damn versatile. I have heard and read comparisons to the SLO, but I’ve never owned a SLO to be able to compare.

Yeah the "aggressive smoothness" and other similar styles of explaining the sound is what I've heard, and is the sound I seem to really like. It's like if you took the best aspects of Marshall sounds but the base was more of a Boogie. So all the positives of a Boogie none of the negatives.

Can't listen right now but I'm thinking Splawn is similar. Clint has had both maybe he will see this. Overdrive is smooth but can be aggressive without fizz. Don't know about the Recto part but I've heard that before as it relates to what Scott Splawn was going for.

Ooo nice let's hope. And I find it funny that 311splawndude is suggesting Splawn haha, makes me imagine you suggesting Splawn for literally any question even like a Dumble clone lol.

Ha ha.

Yeah, that is just coincidence. I do recommend other amps and I try to stay out of threads on things I know nothing about. LOL.

And no, I'm not affiliated with Splawn at all - just a dumb username I picked up and I'm splawndude over on the the Splawn proboard. I think that's where it started :D

Hmmm, I’ve owned a Nitro and a Pro Mod. I did not think they were like the Artemis, but they’re all Marshall variants so I guess they could be dialed in similar. The Artemis has so many voicings and different flavors in a single amp and they all sound good. It’s hard to pinpoint a sound other than maybe be it’s polished?

Polished is definitely a good description, and what I mean when I say "not marshall"!

Well, I'm certainly not trying to sell you anything. If you are looking for an articulate amp that is not overly compressed and in the marshall vein with emphasis on the mids and less fizz give a Splawn a shot. Just throwing it out there since I believe that is what the thread was for.

Tony Evans from the splawn proboards

Great tone there

I also have an Artemis II (two lead channels and one clean.) There are hundreds of sounds in it. Lots of tweaking possibilities.

good to know...making my KSR GAS itch haha

Talk to Kyle (from KSR). He was super friendly and was able to help me make sure what I wanted was what I was getting. It may be that you can get what you're looking for from his new Ceres pedal, or in one of the smaller heads (Ares, I think). The Artemis was a hefty investment, I think the most expensive of his line of amps (or at least at the time), but it was the right choice for the way I prefer to run my rig.

^^ Agreed. Kyle has great customer service. I bought my Artemis off RigTalk about 3 years ago, used, not from Kyle. He still gave me pointers, a manual and descriptions of the controls, etc... always respected that. Even though it was no cash to him, he still cared that I loved the amp.

The Artemis and Colossus are the same flagship, just rack based vs full head. The other amps (except the Juno) are based off sections of the Artemis and Colossus with perhaps some tweaks. For me, my favorite base sound on my Artemis is in the Ares, so I would highly recommend contacting KSR about what you’re looking for.

I have owned Splawn Quickrod and Nitro. I also had a KSR Gemini and played a friend's Colossus several times. The Splawn stuff is very different, If you like the KSR tone then best bet is to get a KSR. You might dig the Revv stuff as they share a modern voice, but it's brighter with more attack than KSR, more high mids.

I have an Orthos and I've had a Quick Rod and a Nitro.

They are apples to oranges. If you like the tones from these clips you will love having a KSR cause they sound better in person and have way more great tones in the box. I cant get a bad sound out of my Orthos and its a swiss army knife of tone. It can handle anything I throw at it.

I highly recommend the Ceres too. I just ordered a power amp from him just to run the Ceres. With the right power section the Ceres hangs with the Orthos no problem.

Email Kyle and just tell him what you are looking for. He really goes a long way to make sure you get the amp you want.
