Amps you gave another chance to and actually liked them the second time around?

I’m about to try with my 5150III STEALTH 100. I got some lower gain tubes to run in V1 and V5. Hate that fucking amp! lol.

I haven’t turned it on in months. Going to give it a go today.

I had this little Marshall Lead 12 head. Got it with a 2x12 stupid cheap. Used it on and off kinda like a joke and through a 4x12 during rehearsal sometimes. Sold it. Realized it sounded so damn good and regretted it. Picked one up for the same price I sold mine!

Wish I could do that with my old American Strat I played as a teen. Ugh.

Another amp I revisited is my ENGL Metalmaster 20. It's decent but too mid scooped for my taste. I stuffed in in the closet for a good while. I pulled it out a few months ago and put an eq in the loop. Much better this time around.

It's still not my favorite amp by a long shot, but with the eq it's worth keeping it hooked up until I need that spot for something better.

The only example I can think of is 2 ch Recto’s. Somehow I didn’t know about the orange ch at the time, so I thought the red ch on the Rev F I tried was good, but not as good as my iic+, but once I actually tried the orange ch years later the 2 ch Recto’s became some of my favorite high gain amps (Rev C being the best) with a sound no other amp has (that iconic throaty low mid growl)

Otherwise no. I AB any new amp I’m interested in with my benchmarks to put things into perspective, so I don’t really get honeymoon phases or other weird broey exaggerated impressions. Sometimes of course new amps come that can send long time favorites packing, but that’s just part of the journey and the most interesting part actually for me

I'm on the verge of buying a D-Moll for the second time, because I don't feel that I gave it a fair shake the first time and was in a hurry so I auditioned it for about 10 minutes then packed it up and shipped it back. I made a couple of quick recordings and now that I'm listening back, I think it sounded pretty badass.

What are some amps that took you two or more tries to appreciate?
The D-Moll is a good amp, but I can't recommend the Herbert enough. It's my favorite Diezel amp and I've tried them all but the VHX. It also sounds amazing at bedroom volumes. If you want a less powerful Diezel then try finding a used Einstein. It's the Herbert's little brother.

I've owned both the Einstein and D-Moll, I recall liking the D-Moll much better. The Herbert is just overkill for me as a home recordist. I've owned those two plus the VH4 and the Hagen at this point, but I'll definitely try a Herbert in the future. Good to know the Herbert has a great master volume. I think all the Diezels I've tried so far do.

If you do try/buy a Herbert, let me tell you a little trick. Max the presence and compensate with treble. This will make the Herbert come alive and the attack and bite is ridiculously good using this little trick.

Sounds crazy but any Marshall. I've been walking around with a Marshall T-shirt for about 10 years and prior to my latest mini Jubillee purchase, I hadn't owned a Marshall since I had my Friedman modded plexi in 2011.

I think I'm better appreciating now how volume can make you love or hate amps. All these years I was thinking I'd buy Marshalls and play in a small room without an attenuator and it would be fine. Thankfully the mini Jubillee sounds amazing and can go to 5 watts. Still loud but sounds great.

Most if not all the amps I've bought over the past 3 or 4 years have been buying back amps I sold. Not that I didn't like them but that I had to sell them for one reason or another

About 12 years ago I acquired a Marshall JVM410H and I really didn't enjoy it. At the time, I was very into the scooped "brutal" thing that was all the rage at the time and felt every amp should resemble the tone of a 5150. My tastes have clearly "matured" a bit as I gave the 410H another chance this year as I found one locally cheap and I think it's an outstanding and versatile amp if you want a Marshall flavor in your stable.

Marshall 1987X halfstack with a 1960 AHW cab. Sold mine like maybe about 8 or 9 years ago and been regretting it ever since then.

Peavey XXX. Liked it the first time but I used to scoop shit way too much back then and blamed the amp for not being able to cut through against a Marshall back then. 2nd time was after I matured a lot as a player and it was fun. Then I got a 6505 and liked that better so I flipped it. Would buy again though. Also had 2 Mesa Mark III's, first a blue stripe then a purple. They both annoyed me with the grating presence. Never will buy again unless a Coli or moded to ++ spec. Loved my IIB loop moded Coli, and love my current Mark VII.

Diezel VH4 and also the Herbert, i bought both used and disliked them and sold them after a few months, but as the years went on i played both again multiple times and ended up loving them and bought both again, and they been some of my favorite amps for over the past 15 yrs.
They are special . Just plugged in one of my Herbert’s . Mk 1 . Thick SOB

I own a MK 1 and love it, it was built about a year before the mk ii came out. I also owned a MK 1 that was within the first 100 built and i hated it and didnt sound nearly as good for whatever reason.
