An Irish immigrant with a valid US work permit has been held in ICE detention in Texas for nearly 5 months despite having no criminal record, the Irish Times reports. Seamus Culleton, who has lived in the US for over 20 years, is married to a US citizen & was in the final stages of a green card application when he was arrested in September.

I wonder how many years he was "in the final stages of a green card application"?
He had 20 to get it done. Bet he wishes he had been more expeditious in taking care of that.
Final stages? Could he not find a pen?

You should be wondering what he did that warranted 5 months in jail with no trial?

The answer is probably "nothing".
Contrary to the media it does not appear to be here legally. Work visas are only for for 1-3 years.

As for the 5 months, This is the result of allowing 10 million people to cross the border illegally. It puts a burden on the system and ruins it for the people trying to do the right thing and pushes them to the end of the line.

My wife is an immigrant and got her green card in less than a year. It really isn’t that hard unless you circumvented the system

What part of the law says detention for 5 months without seeing a judge is ok? If he's guilty, try him and jail him or deport him. If he's innocent (which I believe is the presumption until proven guilty) let him go.

If for no other reason than it costs $$$ to incarcerate someone.
As usual there will be a LOT more to his story than you and we know.

If he's detained, as reported, there's an actual real reason. What have ICE got to gain for holding him for nothing.

Use common sense...if you have any.

He had 16 years to get the paperwork done to be legal in the USA.

IDGAF where you're from; if you're here illegally, you need to be deported (and pay a fine for wasting our time; and pay for your one-way ticket home).

I also want to end "legal" emigration from specific countries; and end H1-B visas.

For a start...

Perhaps there is more to the story. Actually, yes, it's pretty obvious we don't know the entirety of the whole situation. Still, going on what we know is that he's been held for 5 months without seeing any judge. Do you think that is right?

Actually it doesn't matter what you think, it isn't right. I don't feel like googling up the applicable laws but we both know just throwing someone in jail to sit without charges/lawyer/etc isn't 'right'.
